“She’s safe too.”

“I’m relieved, but I know you wanted to capture him alive.”

I sighed. “Things didn’t work out that way.”

“I’m sorry, Cayman. I don’t know what else to say.”

Nor did I. Instead, I changed the subject. “How are you getting on with Wren?”

“We’ve been brainstorming Pharaoh’s identity.”

“Really? Well done, Bex. If you’re successful, you may be next in line for the chief’s job.”

“Ha, ha.”

“I’m not poking fun, my darling. Well, maybe a little. However, you always were adept at solving mysteries.”

She laughed. “I wasn’t.”

“Yes, you were. All those detective shows you and I used to watch? You figured out who the killer was before I did every time.”

“I doubt you’re remembering correctly.”

“And I’m certain I am. Listen, Bex. All kidding aside, I’m insanely proud of you. You know this, yes?”

“Yes, Cay. As I am of you.”

“I can’t wait to see you, hold you in my arms, and make love to you.”

“I feel the same.”

An idea had already begun forming in my mind. “Yeah? What I’d like more than anything is to whisk you away to the island, and this time, instead of fantasizing about stripping you out of your bikini, I’ll actually do it.”

“That does sound nice.”

“Nice? It sounds like heaven to me.”

She laughed. “Yes, you’re right. It would be heavenly.”

“I’m on my way now. I’ll see you in a few short hours. I love you, Bexli.”

“I love you, Cayman. See you soon.”

I ended the call and turned around to find Z directly in front of me.

“Puck will take you to the heliport. The plane is on standby at the Malta airport. We’ll take care of everything here.”

“But—”

“Go, Trace. We are more than capable of handling things without you.”

My sole desire was to see Bexli with my own eyes and know she was as safe as I believed her to be. Then I wanted to take her far away from all this madness. Somewhere I knew no one could touch her but me. “Thank you, Z.”

“Godspeed, Cayman. We’ll send updates when we know more.”

I thanked Z and Nem again, then walked over to where Puck pulled up in the SUV. As I was getting in, I heard Poseidon say, “We’ve got him.” I removed the comms and lay it on the seat beside me.
