“Moretti is dead,” I said to Wren when my call with Cayman ended.
She nodded. “I just received a preliminary report.”
“It sounds as though they’re heading back.”
This time, she shook her head. “Only Cayman is returning.”
I sat beside her at the table. “Something feels off.”
She half smiled. “Your instincts are kicking in. It’s important you listen to them.”
“Why is Cayman returning alone?”
“He believes you may still be in danger.”
“He said Nonna is safe.”
“Yes, it was also in the brief I received.”
I folded my arms and rested them on the table. “What aren’t you telling me?”
“There are still reports coming in,” she said, looking at her mobile. I checked mine, but I hadn’t received anything.
“What do the reports say?”
“The person who shot and killed Mithras—Moretti—isn’t someone from our team.”
“Who is it?”
“Xavier Vella.”
I stood and walked over to the window. My stomach ached, but I couldn’t say with what. Worry? Fear? Maybe both. As I’d said to Wren a minute ago, something felt off. “Why?” I asked without turning around.
“They’re questioning him now.”
“Who is?”
“Poseidon and Oleander.”
“But—”
“Before you ask anything else, please understand I’m receiving information in bits and pieces. It isn’t my intention to keep anything from you. I may just not have the answers to your questions.”
“Right. I’m sorry. I just…I don’t understand.”
“I’m not sure anyone does yet, but we’ll get to the bottom of it. All I can say is—and this is based solely on my own gut reaction—things are more complicated than we originally thought.”
I returned to the table. “It makes sense Xavier would try to rescue his grandmother.”
“It does. However, rather than making himself known, he fled.”
My eyes scrunched, and I bit my tongue to stop from asking why.
“I anticipate we’ll know more when Cayman arrives or by the time he does.”
It would be another four hours, at least, before he did. The bad feeling in my stomach worsened with every passing minute.
