I was in bed when Cayman finished using the lavatory. When he returned to the room, shirtless but wearing flannels, he seemed hesitant.

“Are you waiting for me to invite you to bed?” I asked, winking.

“I didn’t want to make any assumptions.”

“Come on, then,” I said, turning the bedclothes down on the opposite side.

“It feels so good to hold you, Bex,” he said when I rested my head on his chest after he lay next to me. “Do you have any idea how much I love you?”

“I think I do.”

“We need to talk about this.”

I raised my head. “This?”

“You and me. How you feel.”

If there was one thing I knew in my heart I’d never have to question, it was how Cayman felt about me. The same was not true for him. I sat up. “Cay—”

“We don’t have to do this tonight, Bex.”

“I think we do.”

He studied me. His brow was furrowed.

“Since you appear worried, I’ll get straight to it. I love you too. I think I always have, as much as the idea of it terrified me.”

He raised a brow. “You were afraid of loving me?”

“I was afraid of losing you.”

He sat up and cupped my cheek. “I think it’s more that you’ll never get rid of me.”

I took his hand in mine and kissed his palm. “I had a lot of time to think about you in the last few weeks. Knowing you loved me was what got me through. Your name became my mantra. Every time I said it, it made me feel better. I suppose, deep inside, I knew you’d come for me, even when I didn’t allow myself to hope.”

“I would do anything for you, Bex, and you were right to think I’d come. I just wish I’d realized sooner.”

“You had no way of knowing.”

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked myself if I should’ve known you wouldn’t go so long without responding to me.”

I shook my head. “Stop this. I’ve gone silent on you before, and you know it. Quit beating yourself up for something you had no way of knowing was happening.”

He lay down and pulled me with him. “For tonight, would it be okay if I just hold you?”

“I would like that very much.”

It wasn’t more than a couple of minutes before I knew Cayman had fallen asleep. I turned my head and kissed his chest, right above his heart. “It’s you who’ll never get away from me, Cay,” I whispered.

When I wokethe next morning, Cayman wasn’t beside me. I went downstairs and found him and Wren seated at the table.

“I hope we didn’t wake you. Cayman said he didn’t get in until close to midnight,” she said, looking up when I walked in.

He reached for me and pulled me onto his lap, so I kissed his cheek. “I wish you would’ve.”

“Can I get you anything?? Wren asked.

“Tea, but I can get it.”
