Page 16 of Finding Lara

“I sure do.” That grin still rested on Aidyn’s face. That sly smirk unnerved him more than Spencer’s interest in Lara did. Though that did him in a bit, too. His heart felt heavy and his day just grew gloomier.

Lara pulled the cookies from the glass case and arranged them in a box, then poured the three coffees. She set them on the counter and pointed to the end. “Creamer and sugar are down there.”

Tate mentally calculated the cost, laid thirty dollars on the counter and picked up his coffee and the cookies. “I’ll see you guys out there. Have a great day, Lara.”

Before she could say anything, he sauntered out the door without looking back. He’d get creamer at the construction office and go about his day. He huffed out a big breath as he drove into the lot at the construction site and muttered, “Don’t be a baby about this.”

Carrying his box of cookies into the office at the site, he set them on the table next to the coffee. Baxter boomed, “What do you have in there?”

He plastered on a grin and looked at the older man. “Cookies. And they’re decorated like construction equipment.”

“Well, that I’ve got to see.” Baxter made his way over to the box of cookies as Tate added creamer to his coffee and reattached the lid to his cup.

“Well, I’ll be damned. You got those at Lara’s, didn’t you? She makes the prettiest cookies in town. My wife buys her cookies all the time.”

“I did.” He pulled one that looked like a bulldozer from the box. “Help yourself. I’m in a sharing mood today.”

“Well, thank you Tate. I appreciate it.”

Tate turned to leave. “Spencer and Aidyn are pulling in now. We’ll get started on the security cameras right away. Any issues last night?”

“Not that anyone’s discovered. Thank God.”

“Good to know.” He exited the trailer, munching on his cookie, and met Aidyn and Spencer at the tailgate of Spencer’s truck.

“No issues last night.”

Aidyn picked up a yellow construction tote and set it on the ground. “That’s good. We should be able to set up the entire system today with the three of us working on it.”

Spencer hefted another construction tote from the truck. “Tate, think Baxter will let us use one of his UTVs? It would be easier to get through some of the narrow areas than with a truck.”

“Great idea. I’ll go have a chat about that.”

“Bring me a cookie on your way out.”

Tate halted for a split second, then glanced at Aidyn. “You want one too?”

“I do for sure.”

Nodding, he meandered to the trailer and up the steps. Baxter chuckled when he walked in. “Damn, these are good. I just sent a picture of the cookies to my wife. I’d never seen construction cookies.”

Tate chuckled. “Mind if we use one of the UTVs?”

“Not at all. Take what you want. Keys are in them all.”

“You leave the keys in them?”

Baxter grinned. “What do I look like? Hell no. I pull them out and bring them home with me every night. First thing I do when I get out of my truck in the morning is put them all back in so the guys can use them.”

Tate’s cheeks heated. “Good move.” But he felt stupid questioning Baxter on that. No one had more to lose than he did.

He grabbed two cookies and exited. Handing Aidyn and Spencer each their cookie, he nodded to the UTVs. “We can take any of them we want. Do you have a preference? I’ll go get it.”

Spencer bit into his cookie. “Nah. Whichever one you grab will work.”

Tate ambled over to the UTVs and decided he liked the black and red one the best. At least he’d get to have a bit of fun driving the UTVs around today. It took a bit of the sting out of the morning.
