Page 27 of Finding Lara

“I know, honey. We all are. But, until things settle down again, we just need to keep our chins up and ourselves aware.”

She inhaled deeply and let out her breath in a whoosh. “Okay. I’ll wait for you.”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes, Lara.”

She heard the click as the call ended and continued slowly through town. It was too early to call Shianne and she didn’t want to worry her, but her heart beat wildly in her chest, thinking the BRR might be lurking around any corner.

She rotated her head, then stretched her shoulders back as she turned onto Front Street past Porter’s Steakhouse to see if the lights were flashing just out of town as well.

As she neared Porter’s, Mrs. Porter was outside, pulling something from the raised flowerbed surrounding the building. Lara pulled into the parking lot and got out of her vehicle.

“Good morning Mrs. Porter. Are your lights out here too?”

Mrs. Porter shoved her hands on her hips and her bottom lip quivered. “Yes, they are, and those little BRR bastards threw shit in my flower beds. I saw them do it with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen, adding a rub to our roasts for tonight. When I heard the trucks, I came out to the window and witnessed them throw the trash. I’m so damned sick of them.”

“I am too. My dad is on the way to the bakery now to check on things with me before I go inside. I’ll ask him to stop here when he’s finished. I’d leave that all right there so he can see it.”

“Lara, honey, we all love you, but your pa won’t do a damned thing to those bastards!”

Chapter17

Tate finished dressing and headed downstairs. Addy had just made coffee and stood in front of the pot, waiting for it to finish brewing.

“You’re up early, Addy.”

“Yeah. I couldn’t sleep. I know I heard that Jeep running up and down the streets last night.”

“What time?”

“I guess around two thirty. I kept waiting to hear them vandalizing our vehicles outside. Our cars and trucks don’t have Kentucky plates on them and my guess is, those assholes know what we drive. They’re probably driving around looking for our house.”

Tate leaned against the counter and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Yeah. I’ve been thinking about that. In light of the turmoil here, we’ll need to find another place to live. We need to be able to put our vehicles in a garage.”

The coffee finished brewing and Addy pulled a couple of mugs from the cupboard. She poured their coffee then sat at the kitchen table. He added his creamer and sat across from her.

“Your wheels are spinning. What are you thinking?”

“There’s an old factory out of town. It’s not overly big, the company moved out of town and went to Lexington about five years ago. I asked at the diner yesterday and they said they used to make clothing in there. We could take a look at it. Buy it. Convert it. We’d have plenty of room for all of us, plus our vehicles could be hidden inside.”

“That’s not a bad idea, Addy.”

They sipped their coffee in silence until Aidyn clomped down the stairs. “Morning.”

“Morning.” Addy turned her phone toward him and showed him the factory photographs.

Aidyn sat at the table. “What’s that?”

“Addy found an old factory on the edge of town. She’s thinking we could turn it into our home base so our vehicles could be inside and we’d have more room.”

Addy grinned. “Plus, we’d be doing something good for the community. That should get us brownie points.”

Aidyn nodded then scraped his hands through his hair. “Are we going to see the mayor today?”

“Yes. I’ve already emailed him and asked for a meeting this morning.”

Just as the words were out of his mouth, his phone chimed a message. He opened the email app on his phone and found the mayor had responded. “It appears we’re on for eight this morning.”

“Fantastic.”
