“Tate.”

He drove into her a couple more times and his balls drew up painfully, then his seed spilled.

He lowered himself on his elbows above her, his lips against her ear. He kissed her ear softly. “You feel magnificent.”

She giggled. “I was thinking the same about you.”

Chapter27

Lara kissed Tate before he jumped from his truck to drop her off at the bakery. He looked around at the surrounding area as he opened her door and her shoulders tensed.

They entered the bakery through the back door. Tate walked to the front and looked around to make sure no one was inside, then he returned to the kitchen. Lara pulled a stool to the opposite side of her stainless worktable.

“Take a seat and let me make you breakfast.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

She giggled. “I know I don’t have to. I want to. Sit.”

He grinned as he sat, and she pulled eggs from the refrigerator. “How about an omelette?”

“That sounds fantastic.”

“So, while I cook for you, will you tell me about your childhood?”

“Sure. I had a great childhood.” He chuckled. “I grew up in a large home, which we call the compound, but which is nothing like a compound. It’s an older Southern-style mansion my dad had remodeled to house GHOST. Any of the operatives who want to, live there. The others find homes outside of the compound in town. My teammates here with me, Aidyn, Spencer, Henry, Adelaide, and Maya, all lived on or near the compound. They schooled us on the compound and we all grew up together. We played games like search and rescue, we shot weapons at an early age. Aidyn’s mom is a sharpshooter, and she owned a gun range and gave classes. We all grew up knowing how to shoot.”

“Wow. That’s so different from my childhood.” She cracked six eggs into a bowl and began whisking in some milk. “I’m an only child. My mom has been sick most of my life. I’ve never understood her illnesses and my parents are very hesitant to talk about it. So I grew up kind of on my own. Until I met Shianne when I was in second grade. After that, I spent a lot of time at her house, and we grew up together. Although we also grew up knowing how to shoot. That’s something we have in common.”

“Did you always know you wanted to own a bakery?”

“Kind of. It was Shianne’s mom, Klaire, who encouraged me to bake. It kept us out of trouble, and I had a knack for it. Then, I found I loved it. When we chatted about college, it was Klaire who suggested I go to baking school. Shianne went to the same college, the University in Lexington, for business. We roomed together and studied together. We did everything together. When we came home from college, Shianne’s parents surprised her with her shop. It was her graduation present. My parents didn’t want to be outdone, and I think they felt guilty, so they bought me this place. I’ve paid for everything inside of it, though. But it’s a great way to start a business, not being too far in debt.”

“That’s a fact.”

She poured the eggs into the frying pan, added cheese, mushrooms, some green pepper, and bacon and put the lid on the pan, then turned the heat down.

“So your parents own GHOST?”

“Yes.”

“And you will one day?”

“I guess that’s the plan.”

She pulled two plates from the open cabinets and laid them on the table.

Moving to the bakery area, she started a pot of coffee and came back into the kitchen. Before walking around the table, she strode to Tate and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. She hugged him to her tightly and closed her eyes as his scent wafted around her.

When she pulled back, she kissed his lips softly, then tended to their breakfast.

“That was nice.”

She looked over her shoulder at him. “It was. Thank you.”

He stood and stepped out to the bakery. She heard him pull ceramic coffee cups from the shelf above the coffeemaker and fill them. When he came back to the kitchen, she was flipping the omelette onto their plates. They folded over perfectly, and he chuckled.

“You’re a professional for certain. I’ve never managed an omelet to look like that.”
