“I’ll show you some day.”

“Deal.”

He set her coffee on the table and she slid his plate to him, then took a stool and sat across from him. He took a bite, and she hesitated while she waited for his response. She wanted him to like it.

“Wow. This is fantastic.”

“Thank you.” She took a forkful of her breakfast, and they ate while they chatted.

Sleeping in his arms last night had been magical. He was kind and caring and gentle. She wondered what she did to deserve such a wonderful man. She’d never enjoyed sex like she had yesterday. Her fingers wanted to touch him everywhere. And she did. Or at least she tried. He did the same thing, and she prayed they wouldn’t get bored of each other.

“What do you have to do today?”

He grinned. “I’m on day shift this week. So, I’ll be out at the construction site all day. But, Lara, I mean this, if you see Kent, or anyone else from the BRR, call me. There is nothing going on there that can’t wait a minute or two. We’re mostly there for the presence and we work in twos. So I can come if they are anywhere near here.”

“Okay.”

He set his fork on his plate, then reached across the table and took her right hand in his left hand. “Baby, tell me you promise.”

She swallowed and blinked rapidly because tears threatened. No one had ever called her baby. And no one had ever looked after her like Tate did. Her nose stung as the tears pooled and she inhaled deeply, then let it out.

“I promise.”

His fingers squeezed hers.

“Can you promise me something?” she asked shyly.

“Sure.” He grinned and waited.

“Will you promise to always call me baby?”

He laughed. “I promise.”

He stood quickly and moved around the large table. As he reached her, she stood and his arms scooped her into a tight hug; his lips on hers, their tongues danced and played and when he set her down on the ground, he whispered, “Baby.”

Chapter28

Lara hummed throughout her day. The sun was shining; the birds were singing, and, at the moment, all was right in her world.

She was happy when the front doorbell rang, because Tate had set that up. Once again, she marveled at all he’d done to help her in such a short amount of time.

Klaire Brown walked to her glass bakery counter with a huge smile on her face. “I understand there’s a man in your life.”

Her cheeks burned bright red, and there wouldn’t be any denying anything with Klaire.

“It’s new.”

Klaire reached across the counter and took her left hand in her hands. “Honey, I’m so happy for you. Now, we just have to find a man for Shianne.”

“Well, didn’t she tell you she was going to the Ball with one of the new guys in town?”

“She did not.”

“I’d feel bad about saying anything, except I know it was Shianne who told you about Tate.”

Klaire giggled. “I’ve been pestering her to no end. The talk is all over town that his truck was in your driveway all night last night.”

Lara’s hands flew to her cheeks in an instant. “Small towns suck sometimes.”
