Henry nodded. “Not a bad thought.”

“Okay. We’re out. We’ll go up the south side of the mountain and see what we can find.”

He and Aidyn exited the trailer and stopped at the Impala. They strapped on their weapons, comm units, and flashlights. Then headed across the construction site toward the fence line where the BRR was messing around.

They approached the fence with caution. Neither of the men had bent down as if attaching anything to the fence, but they likely knew they were on camera and would have been sly about their activities.

Neither he nor Aidyn found signs of tampering.

Aidyn walked alongside him and huffed out a breath. “What do you suppose they were doing? It makes no sense.”

“It sure doesn’t. They seem to be a step ahead of us all the time, which is irritating. And I don’t enjoy being played.”

“I’m right there with you.” Aidyn scratched his head. “So, they came down here and looked around but did nothing. I wonder if Kent was pulling something somewhere else while these two were occupying our attention.”

Tapping his comm unit he called out. “Maya, have you looked through the other videos during the same time Ramsey and Brenner were by the fence? We’re wondering if they were a decoy.”

“I’ll run through it now. I’ve been watching all the cameras.”

Exiting the construction site and beginning their trek up the mountain, they walked across large rocks and any path without debris that would make noise. It was likely the BRR was watching them as much as they were being watched.

The sounds of 4-wheelers reached them as they were halfway up the mountain. Aidyn crouched alongside him and whispered. “They’re watching. That was a signal. Listen, they’re revving their engines in a pattern. Not moving, though. I heard no tires on the gravel.”

“You’re right.” They listened to the alarm, of sorts. Three long revs of the engine, then one short. Pause. Three long revs and a short.

“Let’s move around to the southeast side of the mountain. I don’t see them using that side as much.”

“Ten-four.”

They moved along in a crouched position, making their way through brush and trees. The terrain was rugged. More than once, their feet tangled in brush and downed branches covered in leaves and debris.

A soft humming reached his ears. He halted Aidyn and tapped his ear. Aidyn listened with him, then pointed to just above them and to the left. He nodded, and they changed course to see if they could find the source.

A small clearing shone in the moonlight just ahead of them. Within the clearing was a tiny structure, not tall enough for either of them to stand in. There were no windows and only one door was visible.

Both he and Aidyn crouched low and looked for a better vantage point. Footsteps sounded on the dried leaves and brush on the ground. Both stayed low and watched.

Kent stopped at the door of the small structure and kneeled down. Slowly opening the door, he scooted inside. The bluish light that shone from inside was a computer or television screen.

Tate nudged Aidyn. “They have computers in there.”

“It looks like it.”

“I’d like to get in there and see what they’re doing.”

“As soon as Kent leaves, we’ll head over.”

The door opened with a creak, and Kent crawled out, then closed it. He added a padlock to the door and locked it.

Kent slowly ambled up the hill and moved toward the west side. A 4-wheeler started up, and they listened as he motored out of earshot.

Tate moved from the brush they hid in and quietly picked his way to the structure. He circled the outside to see where the wires were located. He noted they were up a tree, then across the tops of the trees then tacked to the nearest enormous tree trunk. Aidyn nodded after he pointed up.

Aidyn followed the power lines to see where they went, and he worked on picking the lock to see what was inside. Several attempts to open the lock failed. “Fuck.” He whispered after the third failure.

Finally, setting the pin inside the lock securely, he twisted it open and let out a long breath.

“I’m in.”
