Aidyn confirmed. “Roger. I’m still following the wires.”

Inside, the monitor was off, but he found the power button and turned it on. Of course, he didn’t have a password but tried a few he thought might be possible. The fifth try it locked him out. He’d come back with software to hijack their computer.

Turning the monitor off, he scrambled from the structure and locked the padlock once again. Striding across the clearing, he retraced his footsteps to Aidyn.

Aidyn pointed up. “They’re running the wires to the base. Hijacking electricity. It makes sense, it’s on generator power, so it won’t affect them at all when they throw the power.”

“I’m sure they have the app worm blocked on their computers.”

“True, but sometimes they run amok.”

He nodded. “I’m going up further to see if I can see more.”

“Right behind you.”

They continued up the mountain, slowly making their way, listening intently for any sounds alerting them to others in the area.

Near the top, they started seeing structures. They were the size of small homes and Everett’s cabin wasn’t within sight from this vantage point. They didn’t have plumbing up here, though the townsfolk didn’t believe they had electricity either. He and Aidyn continued skirting the structures, careful not to make noise when they heard two men talking.

They froze and listened.

“I told you to stop fucking around down there. You either want to be a townie or you want to stay here with your people.”

“I want to be with my people. But I want that fucker to pay. That bakery bitch too.”

“You don’t decide that. President does. If I catch you going down again, you’ll be severely punished. This is your last warning.”

Tate’s muscles twitched at the remark about Lara. It had to be Kent, but he hadn’t ever heard his voice, so he couldn’t identify it.

The two walked away, and one man walked into the structure they now hid behind. They heard items hitting the walls and finally a glass broke. He then yelled, “FUUUUUCK!”

Aidyn slowly rose to look in a window just above them. He stared for a while and Tate rose and looked inside as well. Kent stomped around and paced. Finally, a small older woman entered the structure, which seemed to be their house, and tried calming him down.

“Kent, honey, settle down. You can’t keep doing this. You’ll be ostracized and I’ll be left alone here.”

“Mom. Why aren’t you mad? How can you not want to kill that fucker and his bitch daughter?”

“He’s done nothing to me or you.”

“Really? Nothing!”

The older woman sat wearily at an old wooden table.

“He left us here.”

“It’s complicated.”

“And she has everything. I should have a business. I should live the life I want to live. But I’m stuck up here like an orphan. You’re left up here working like a dog.”

“Kent. Please.”

The older woman began crying and Kent stopped ranting and pacing and sat at the table across from her. He said nothing.

Footsteps on the dried leaves startled them and a thin, young woman stared at them. She had long dark hair flowing around her shoulders. She wore a long dress with flowers printed on it and she carried a basket on her arm.

Aidyn looked at her and held his finger up to his lips. Her eyes bounced between the two of them and a barely perceptible nod was followed by her holding her forefinger to her lips. She then turned and walked toward their camp.

“We better get out of here in case she tells someone.”
