“Where is she?”

“Kent has her.”

“Why?”

“Because of me.”

“What did you do?”

He heard Keaton inhale a deep breath, then his voice shook when he responded. “I promised to distribute their elixir to help raise the money to pay the taxes.”

“You what?” Tate swiped his hand down his face. “Why the fuck would you agree to that?”

“They were blackmailing me.”

“For what?”

Keaton didn’t answer and he lost any shred of patience he had left.

“Keaton, dammit, I swear to God if they harm her, I will do everything in my power to bring you down.”

“We have to get her before six tonight. Everett is threatening to marry her at six. To make her pay for my misdeeds.”

Tate pulled the phone from his ear and looked up the mountain. Gaige took his phone gently and finished speaking to Keaton.

Tears filled his eyes as he thought of her up there, scared and alone. He’d promised her he’d keep her safe. He’d broken his promise.

He half listened to his dad talk to that piece-of-shit deputy but he couldn’t catch his breath. He’d just found her and now...

His dad pulled him in for a hug and whispered, “We’ll get her back. Let’s go, your teammates are ready to help you find her.”

He reluctantly followed his dad inside. He wanted to run up that mountain right. The. Fuck. Now.

Tate buckledhis tactical belt around his waist and stood.

His mom stared into his eyes. “Okay. Please be careful.”

He nodded and kissed her temple, then slipped out the back door. He looked around for anyone watching. He’d scoured Lara’s cameras earlier and saw them take her. He nearly vomited when he watched her struggle while he was in the house on his computer. She meant more to him than anything, including this mission, if he were being honest.

His parents followed him out, driving in their vehicle to the GHOST house.

He jumped in the old Malibu and called Aidyn.

“Yeah.”

“I’m on my way.”

“We’re ready.”

He hung up and navigated a corner to drive past the bakery on the off chance they took her there. No signs of anyone on the property.

As he pulled into the driveway of the GHOST house, his heart raced. He swallowed then opened his door just as his dad reached him.

“Tate. Son. I know what you’re feeling right now. You’ve got to make sure your head is on straight. Lara needs you to use your head right now. Your heart will make decisions later. Clear?”

He looked into his dad’s eyes. Hedidknow how Tate felt. His mom had been lost for a time back in the day.
