“Yeah. It’s hard.”

“I know.”

Aidyn was waiting for them by the door as they entered.

“We’re ready.”

“Thanks Aid. I appreciate it.”

Stepping further into the house, his teammates were all there. Geared up and ready to roll. He nodded at them and had to take a deep breath to get his emotions under control.

When he let it out, he nodded at his friends. “Thanks for being here for me.”

Maya chuckled. “As if we wouldn’t. Let’s go get our baker.”

Okay. He handed Maya the thumb drive. “This will kill the worm. You and Addy need to slip into the computer shed and insert this.”

“Will do.”

He turned to Spencer. “You on the computer tonight?”

“Yep. I’ll be back in action soon.”

Tate shook his head. “Just heal up. Someone needs to be on the computers to keep track of us. Mom will help you watch.”

Spencer grinned and looked at his mom. “Sounds good.”

He turned to Henry and his dad. “When we get halfway up the hill we need to separate. You two go west, Aidyn and I will go east. I suspect he has her in Everett’s cabin.”

Using his phone he pulled a map up and showed them a general area where Everett’s cabin was located. “They have houses all around. The computer cabin is in this area.” He pointed to the spot near the road closest to the base. “They’ll likely be watching us.” He pointed between his dad, Henry, Aidyn, and himself. “Maya and Addy, you should be able to slip up there nearly undetected. But be wary; they seem to be everywhere. I’m sure they’ll be expecting us.”

Maya nodded then turned to Addy. She grinned. “We’ve got this.”

He looked at his team, then his parents. “Okay. Let’s go. We’ve only got an hour.”

He and Aidyn drove to the east side of town and found a spot behind a house where they parked their car. His father and Henry were behind them. Maya and Addy drove to the base to park.

Silently making their way across the street, they started up the black road, stopping a hundred yards before it ended. It didn’t get them even to halfway, but it was easier going than moving through the woods.

At that point, they turned on their comm units and slid into the duskiness of the wooded terrain. He looked back at his dad and Henry and nodded as they parted ways.

The path they took was a combination of rocks jutting out from brush and dead branches and soil made soft and murky from lack of sunlight. They had infrared goggles, but it wasn’t quite dark and discerning the soil from the rocks while not losing their balance tested their patience.

They moved back and forth a few hundred feet to remain undetected. Aidyn stopped at a tree where a basket laid. He looked at the basket, found it empty, and kept moving.

Movement ahead of them halted their progress. They knelt and listened. Low voices sounded through the woods. Most of the conversation was difficult to hear. Some of it, though, made his blood run cold.

“If he doesn’t follow through tonight, you know what to do.”

“I do.”

“Don’t hesitate. Don’t wimp out.”

“I won’t.”

Their steps faded as one of them moved across the mountain to the east. The other one moved up toward the top.

Tate looked back at Aidyn and pointed to the top of the mountain, and Aidyn nodded. They gave themselves a bit of time before continuing up the hill.
