Walking into the headquarters of the Irish mafia isn’t new. I’ve been here more times than I can count. But what is unexpected is to see Denis Gallagher himself pacing the floor.

“Thanks for coming,” Makenna says solemnly. “Although I expected you tomorrow, today is better.”

Ace nods. “Things change. Tell us why she was taken,” he instructs, as the rest of the brothers pile in.

Everyone is here: Denis, Makenna, their brother Finn, Makenna’s husband, Dante, and his two brothers, Romero and Alessio, along with their wives, Holly and Gabby.

“Chloe arrived in Chicago fifteen days ago. She spent a few days staying with Jade and Rocco,” Denis explains. Jade is their cousin and is married to the capo of the Italian mafia in Chicago. “She was on her way to Indianapolis to go stay with Hayden and Ade when the car she was in was T-Boned and she was taken. When Elio Gallo woke up, she was gone, and there was no sign of her. That was twelve days ago, and no one has heard from her or who took her.” Elio Gallo is Rocco’s brother and his underboss for Indianapolis.

“Okay, so what’s the word on the street?” I ask, needing to know what’s been said. “Someone must have some information.”

Denis shakes his head. “No one is spilling. Which tells me that whoever the fuck has my daughter has some power behind them.”

Holly crosses her arms over her chest. “We have to find her,” she implores with tears in her eyes. Holly is Denis’ older daughter and Chloe’s sister.

“What about the Gallo’s enemies?” I ask. It could be a factor as to why she was taken.

Makenna shakes her head. “We’ve gone down that road and nothing.”

“Doesn’t mean it’s not why she’s gone.”

Denis narrows his eyes at me, and I notice Makenna doing the same.

“Want to tell me what I’m missing?” Denis says, his voice thick with his Irish accent.

“Chloe’s Py’s woman, and we’re not arguin’ about this,” Ace says. “We’re here to help, and we all want the same thing. Chloe found and brought home. So let’s not do this shit now.”

Denis clenches his jaw. “Do you have any news?”

“I have a guy who is keeping his ear to the ground. He’s the biggest player in Indiana, and he’s gonna help.”

Denis’ eyes narrow. “Oh, you’re telling me you have Kelvin Acaster on speed dial?”

I reach into my pocket and call Kelvin.

“Py, just the man I was about to call. This a good time?”

“I’m with the Gallagher’s,” I tell him as I hit the speakerphone.

“Right,” he says. “She was taken in a blue van. That van is now burned to ashes but was left three blocks from the Gallagher’s restaurant. Whoever has her, they’re fucking with them.”

“So, who has her?” Denis demands. “Who the fuck has my daughter?” His voice is vibrating with anger and worry.

“That’s not something I have uncovered, but from what I have uncovered, it’s got something to do with the Kelly’s of Ireland. From the rumblings my men have heard, Sean Kelly has ties here in Indiana, ones I’ve yet to uncover, but Denis, the man wants your daughter dead.”

Denis swipes a hand down his face. “Fuck,” he growls. “We need to find out who the fuck that cunt’s working with.”

“I will. Py, I’ll see you tomorrow,” he tells me, and I hide my smile. The fucker knows me too well. He knows I’ll be in Indianapolis by the morning. Kelvin ends the call, and the room is stunned into silence.

“Okay, want to tell me why the fuck the Kelly’s want Chloe and who they are?” Ace asks with a raised brow.

“My first wife,” Denis begins, “was an absolute cunt,” he growls. The hatred he has in his voice for the woman is surprising. He treats his wife and kids like they’re fucking fragile. “Zoe gave birth to six children. Only two of which are biologically mine. The fucking bitch slept her way through Dublin, fucking anyone with a bit of power. Chloe’s father was Sean Kelly Junior. I have no fucking idea as to why the old bastard wants my daughter dead, but I know someone who’ll help.” He pulls out his cell and moves out of the room. The man is about to lose it. No doubt the worry and anger he’s feeling has been bottled up since he discovered she was taken, and he’s not let loose yet.

“The Kelly’s are monsters,” Holly says, her accent not as thick as her father’s but definitely thicker than her aunt’s. “Growing up, the stories we heard… everyone thought they were fictitious. But they weren’t. The Kelly’s are crazy. They rape, murder, and torture anyone they want, with or without cause.”

“The Kelly family are known for their addictions. It’s not unheard of for one of the brothers, cousins, or uncles to be completely out of his head and go on a rampage,” Makenna tells us.

“Yep, those animals love to torture people. Anyone will do, including their own family,” Holly hisses. “The things I’ve heard them do...” She shakes her head. “That Sean Kelly senior killed his wife because she showed her daughter more attention than she showed him.” She looks away from us, her eyes glassy.
