Megan nodded. “That’s right. But you also owe it to yourself. This has been what you’ve wanted to do with your life ever since I met you. Even in school, you were obsessed with this disease no one had heard of. Now you have a chance to make huge advancements in the research. Of course you’re going to do it.”

Amy nodded.

“You were always going to do it,” Megan said. “You knew when you sat down that you were going to do it. You just needed me to tell you what you already knew.”

“You’re good at that,” Amy said. “That’s why we’re friends.”

“I know it is. Now call that guy and tell him you’re going to help him out, for God’s sake. You do realize he’s probably been waiting by the phone since the last time you saw each other?”

“No he hasn’t.”

“I’ll bet he has. I would have been, if it was a matter of finding a doctor who could literally save my life.”

“You haven’t met this guy. It hasn’t even occurred to him that I might say no. Itoldhim I might say no, and he just laughed. I don’t think anyone’s ever denied him anything in his life.”

“Sounds like a rich guy to me.”

“That’s exactly what it is,” Amy said. “He thinks his money can get him anything he wants. He’s not anxious about whether I’m going to call him. He already knows I’m going to. That alone is enough to make me not want to do it.” She sighed. “But I can’t decide based on the fact that he annoys the crap out of me, I guess. I have to decide based on what the right thing to so is, and the right thing is pretty clear in this case.”

“Can I listen while you call him?”

“What do you want to listen for?”

“I want to hear his voice.” Megan giggled again. “I want to see if he sounds as sexy as you say he is.”

“You want to eavesdrop on the call?”

“Oh, what’s the harm? You won’t be discussing any medical details, so it’s not like it’s a confidentiality breach, right? And if you’re worried about dishonesty, it’s not like he’s always been forthcoming with you.”

“Well, that’s true,” Amy admitted. “I guess I could call in front of you and there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that, as long as we don’t get into anything medical. I don’t want to do that. But I wouldn’t mind getting him back a little for pulling the wool over my eyes.”

Megan grinned. “That’s the spirit.”

Amy pulled out her phone and the business card and dialed. Megan took the card from her and ran her finger over the glossy surface. “Nice.”

Amy hushed her.

The phone rang. Amy placed it on the coffee table in front of her so they would both be able to listen to the conversation.

“Hello?”

Megan grabbed the phone before Amy could speak. “Is this Adriano Canali?” she asked, looking at the business card.

Amy swatted her arm and reached for the phone, but Megan leaned away from her.

“May I ask who’s calling?” Adriano asked.

“This is Dr. Amy Daniels’ personal assistant. I have her on hold for you if you’re available to take a call.”

“Oh—yes, I’m available.”

“Let me place you on a brief hold.” Megan muted the phone.

“What the hell are youdoing?” Amy demanded.

Megan laughed. “It won’t kill the rich boy to have to jump through a few hoops to get what he wants. Do you think we’ve kept him on hold long enough, or should we make him wait a few more minutes?”

“Give me the phone, Meg.” She snatched it out of her friend’s hand and unmuted it. “Mr. Canali?”
