“I can’t lose you, Oz. I didn’t know what I was capable of until I faced a reality without you in it.”

“Is he…dead?”

“Very dead, yes.” Zig laughs.

“Good. Fucker deserves it,” Ox growls before tipping my head back to check my throat. His fingers smooth over the scab I can feel. “You drew from him somehow to give to me?”

I mimic his actions and run my fingers down his neck. “It was more for me. I knew if I healed you, I wouldn’t survive. You were a heartbeat away from death, and when I took that injury on, I wouldn’t have anything left to fix myself.”

“If he hadn’t been here, I would have died.”

“No. If he hadn’t been here, I would have. There was no way I was letting you go.” The thought is a terrifying one, knowing that any lines I put in place to protect myself have just been blown to pieces. But I wouldn’t change a thing.

“We need to get out of here before someone comes looking for him,” Zig warns as he gets to his feet, holding out his hand to me.

“There was a man here talking to Alejandro before. He’s coming for me.”

“Well, that’s tough shit because he can’t have you. Are you going to be okay?” he asks as he helps me up before offering a hand to his brother.

“I’m not going to crash just yet, thanks to him.” I point to what’s left of Alejandro. “But I don’t know how long that will last.”

“We need to get rid of his body. We can’t have anyone finding him like that and asking questions,” Oz states.

Zig looks around the room. “Help me lift him onto the bed.”

I stand back as they both grab hold of Alejandro and lift him with ease onto the bed before stripping him out of his white coat and covering him with a sheet.

“Here, put this on.” Zig holds open the white coat for me to slip on before pulling my hair free from the collar.

Oz does the tiny snaps up before giving my shoulders a squeeze. “I’ll check if the coast is clear.”

“What’s the plan?” I ask Zig, who grabs the end of the bed and kicks off the locks holding it in place.

But before he can say anything, Oz interrupts us. “Okay, it’s clear. Come on.” And moves in beside me, taking the head of the bed, and they both maneuver it out of the room.

I follow and close the door behind me.

“Which way?”

Zig reads the signs before pointing to the left. “Head to the morgue.”

Because where else would we take a dead body?

“Keep your head down and try to look doctor-y,” Oz says with a smirk.

“Doctor-y?” I snort and keep my head down as we pick up the pace. When we round the corner, it’s filled with people, but nobody pays attention to us.

By the time we make it down to the morgue, I’m breathing heavily, and my clothes are sticking to me. I lean against the wall and take a deep breath as Oz pushes the bed through the double doors alone.

Zig crouches down in front of me. “You’re doing good, Salem. Really good.”

“Really? Because I’m not gonna lie, I feel like I’m going to pass out.”

“Shit. Here, give me the coat.”

I fumble to take it off before handing it over to him. He slips it on as I frown in confusion.

“If someone sees me and Oz carrying out what looks to be a doctor, people might stop us.”
