“But if they see a doctor carrying a woman, especially one covered in blood, they won’t question it.”

“Exactly. It’s all about perception.” He grabs my hand. Oz pushes back through the door, holding a bottle of water in his hands and an apple.

“Did you just steal someone’s lunch?”

“If they didn’t want someone to take it, they shouldn’t leave it lying around,” he states indignantly.

I laugh, reaching for the water, too drained to care. I drink it all before handing the bottle back to him. “My hero.”

“Always. Now, eat this.”

“After.”

“After what?”

“After I wake up,” I tell him a second before I pass out.

“Fuck.” I catch her before she hits the ground and swing her up into my arms. “We need to get out of here. Let’s turn and burn.”

Oz grins at me. “Top Gun?”

“What can I say? Our girl is rubbing off on me. What did you do with Alejandro?”

“Stuck him in the back with three other bodies and tied one of their toe tags on him. Hopefully, they think his body has already been processed. It will buy us some time.”

“It will have to do.” I head toward the fire exit and wait for Oz to shove it open.

“We need a car, Oz.”

“On it.” He jogs away as I hover in the doorway, out of sight.

I look down at the woman in my arms and hold her closer to me. I picture her face, the shame coating her features as she drained Alejandro to heal Oz. I hate this fucking world sometimes. How this one woman should be expected to carry such a burden is beyond me. She’s been through so much, and the hits just keep on coming.

When we were separated, it brought home just how vulnerable Salem is with only the two of us protecting her. We’ll always fight for her, but we’re only two men, and right now, I feel like we need an army.

A loud whistle splits the air. I follow the sound and see Oz waving out of a beat-up red Honda. I hurry over to him as he jumps out and opens the back door. I climb in with Salem. Oz slams the door closed before climbing back into the driver’s seat and driving out of the parking area.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve hot-wired a car.”

“Not many cars in the jungle,” I remind him, my eyes still on Salem in my arms.

“Is she doing okay?”

“I think so. It’s hard to tell. That was not a normal healing.”

“What she did to Alejandro…” He whistles. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

“I doubt anyone has. But Oz, without him—”

“I know. I’d be dead.”

We’re quiet for a moment as Oz navigates the quiet streets.

“It costs her. Doing what she did the way she did. I could see it on her face. She thinks she’s a monster.”
