“Answer the damn question,” he growls, and it was nearly animalistic.

“No, because it’s not relevant. I’m not taking the job. I’ve already told Rachel this. So, you have nothing to worry about,” I state sternly and yank my arm from his grip as I glare. “And for the record, if I knew it was for you, I’d have never applied in the first place. Now, leave me alone.” Spinning on my heels, I rush away from him, wanting to put as much space between us as quickly as possible. I don’t even bother with paying for the groceries in my cart. I abandon the damn thing on another aisle and head for the doors.

My emotions are overwhelming, and I hate myself for allowing my feelings toward that man to continue when I shouldn’t.

At my car, I rush to get in and glance around, thankful not to see him anywhere. I really should go back in and pay for the few groceries I had, but I need to get home before it’s too late.

It’s already going to be bad enough that I won’t have a job to report to, and that means being screamed at and pain. Lots and lots of pain.

* * *

“You worthless slut,” my father yells the moment I step through the doors. “Where the hell have you been?”

I inwardly flinch at his name-calling, having learned years ago not to let him see my pain or what he does to me. “I’m sorry, I had a job interview. Did you need something?”

“Did you get the job?” he demands as my mom joins him, her eyes watching me like I was totally and completely beneath her.

“Hector is here for you,” she announces and gets a smug grin on her face before I can answer.

I barely contain my shock and swallow back the bile already threatening to come up. Why is he here? I thought I had at least a day at most to get the money together. I figured I’d hock a couple of things to make up the extra money needed. Him being here is surely nothing good at all.

“Once Hector finishes with you, you better have news for me.” My dad grips my arms and shakes me violently. “You do as he says, or I’ll make you wish like fuck you died instead of Noah.”

My dad shoves me hard, and I stumble back, colliding with the edge of the wall. A sharp pain rushes up and down my arm, where it connected with the corner. Again, I know better than to make a peep about it and make my way to my room, where I know Hector will be waiting for me. I don’t bother wasting time. It’s better to go ahead and get it over with when it comes to Hector.

I open the door and find Hector sprawled out on my bed, his arms bent, hands resting behind his head. He looks as if he belonged there, though he definitely didn’t.

“Hector,” I greet him cautiously. My eyes holding his and watching as he comes out of his relaxed pose and gets to his feet.

“Noelle,” he says my name smoothly. His eyes assess me, and he crooks a finger. “Come here.”I force myself to close the distance between us, and Hector immediately engulfs me in his arms when I’m within reaching distance. Hector tangles his fingers in my hair and yanks back hard enough that a small cry leaves my lips. “You wanna tell me what you were doing at the Devil’s Riot MC clubhouse?”

My eyes widen, and my lips part. How did he . . .

“Don’t look so surprised, mis dulces, I watch out for those who belong to me.” The way he chuckles and releases me with one hand to cup the side of my face, I know I’m definitely in for it. “You going to explain, bebé?”

“I . . . I had a job interview,” I answer, barely keeping my voice from quivering. “I didn’t get the job.”

“And what job would that be,mi dulcebebé?”

God knows I hate when he calls me his sweet baby. I’m not his anything. Yet he seems to think so.

“It was for a nanny position. You know I lost my job, and I was trying to get a new one so I can make sure Dad . . .”

I don’t get to finish speaking before Hector releases me and slaps me hard enough to send me propelling back onto the bed.

“You don’t go looking for work in places like that. You know who you belong to.” He seethes. “Do you think I’m stupid to think you will work as a nanny?”

“It’s true,” I cry out and try to scramble to my feet as he jumps on top of me. “I swear, Hector. I was just trying to get a nanny position.”

“Bullshit, Noelle.”I try to fight him off me, but he’s too big and wraps a hand around my throat, my vision peppering with spots. “You were going to be one of their whores. And this is something I will not allow,” he sneers, runs his nose along my cheek, and takes a heavy breath. “You belong to be Noelle, and you better remember it. From here on out, there will be no job for you. You will be at my beck and call.”

No. No. No.

Hector squeezes tighter at my neck and uses his free hand to grip my shirt up and over my breasts. “Now, you’ll learn your lesson for this little stunt,mi dulcebebé, and then I’ll explain some other things to you,” he snaps.

It’s then that my world gets flipped upside down as my door is thrown open.
