“Wait…” His eyebrows drew together. “Ethan… Ethan Hall?”

“His paintings sold within minutes.” Even through her disdain, Daisy remained annoyingly supportive.

Nicholas’s eyes lit up. “I saw that. Your work is impressive. I’ll have to commission a—”

“I don’t do commissions.”

“I’m sure I can convince you. Money’s no issue.”

I closed my eyes, trying to keep my anger in check. “I don’t do commissions,” I repeated slower.

Daisy sighed. “Ethan…”

“What?”

“Hey, Nicholas.” She turned to the arrogant ass. “I’d really love another glass of champagne. Would you mind?”

“Of course.” He took her glass with a wink. “Will you meet me back inside for the auction? I need a good luck charm.”

Her jaw twitched beneath her fake smile. “Sure.”

As soon as Nicholas disappeared inside, Daisy spun around. “What are you doing? Don’t screw up this opportunity because you’re mad at me.”

“I’m not. I just don’t do commissions.” I leaned against the concrete ledge. “And I’m not mad at you.”

“You wouldn’t have pulled me out here if you weren’t mad.”

“I pulled you out here because I can’t stand another man touching you.”

Her long eyelashes fluttered. “Women have been fawning over you all night, and I’ve managed not to make a scene.”

“That’s because you have the upper hand,” I said, shifting closer.

“How so?”

“That dress.”

“What about this dress?”

“Don’t play dumb, Daise.”

The corner of her mouth twitched. “I thought you didn’t like it.”

I shook my head. “I never said that.”

“You acted like you didn’t.”

I ran my fingers through my hair as I stared into the starless sky. “Because I’m trying to stay out of trouble.”

“Well…maybe I want a bit of trouble.”

My hands curled into fists as I fought the desire to touch her. “Daise…”

“I’ve been playing it safe for seven years. I’ve never taken any risks or done anything adventurous. I’m just making up for lost time.”

I groaned. “Can’t you just get a tattoo?”

“Oh.” Daisy snickered. “I’ve done that already.”
