“Yeah. Went to bed at six.”

“Are you working a big case?” I questioned.

Draven laughed. “No. Working a smoking hot brunet.”Should’ve known.“What do you need?” he asked.

“I need you to watch someone for me,” I said.

“Sweet. Never thought you’d need me. Who am I watching?” he said.

“Venus Prada.”

“Who the hell is that?” Draven asked.

“MaKayla’s mother,” I replied.

“Her mother?” I nodded and he said, “Damn, didn’t see this coming. What changed?”

“It’s just a precaution. I’m going to be spending some time with them, but I also need some time alone with MaKayla,” I replied.

“And what do you think Venus is going to do? MaKayla’s a grown woman. It’s not like she can stop that, can she?” he asked.

“Until I know why MaKayla doesn’t know anything about where she came from, I am not taking any chances. Her mother, or whoever this Venus is, can’t be trusted,” I stated firmly.

“And you want to know what she does when MaKayla isn’t around,” he asked.

“Exactly. If she leaves the hotel, meets with anyone, I need to know,” I stated.

“Got it.”

“I’ll send you a photo of her and all the information I have on her. Hopefully after lunch today, I’ll have more to send you,” I stated.

“How the hell are you having lunch with them without making Venus suspicious?” he asked. “What are you doing? Pretending to be MaKayla’s boyfriend?”

“Her former professor.”

Draven laughed. “Yeah. I see it. I’m boyfriend material. You’re the nerd.”

He only said that because I valued education, while he had a 2.0 grade point average and even that was because he was the quarterback on the college team.

“If you’re finished, I need to go prepare a few things before I go pick up the ladies,” I stated.

“Am I supposed to be watching you guys eat?” he asked.

“No. You’ll be watching Venus after we return.”

“Okay. I’ll be ready when you need me,” he said.

I ended the call and sent Draven all the information he would need for now. The one thing I didn’t need to worry about was him being discreet. He was a professional when it came to getting what he needed. Now it was on me to ensure MaKayla didn’t find out I was having Venus followed. Although she said she would trust me, I don’t think she’d forgive me for crossing this line.

I needed to confirm that we were still going for lunch today. Texting MaKayla, I asked, DID YOU TELL YOUR MOTHER ABOUT LUNCH?

I waited twenty minutes and there was still no response. The last time MaKayla and I spoke, I was to arrive at their hotel at eleven-thirty. With the traffic, that meant I should be leaving shortly. There had been no indication that MaKayla had changed her mind, but the lack of communication this morning made it appear as though something had changed.

Giving her another ten minutes to respond was the longest I could go. I had no choice but to call her phone.

It rang, once, twice, three times and just before going to voicemail, “Hi. I’m in the shower. I’ll call you back.”

The call ended, and my mind instantly was filled with thoughts of her standing naked in the shower, her hand running over her body with a soapy loofah.
