My cock began to harden.

Fuck!

This was something I’d expect from Draven, not me. Never had I felt such a strong physical attraction to a client and I had worked with some gorgeous women. It was unprofessional and thoughts of this kind needed to stop. It was going to be hell, but controllable.

My cell phone rang, and I looked at the caller ID. It was MaKayla. That was fast. I actually could’ve used a few more moments to get my head back in check. “Hello MaKayla. Sorry to have interrupted your shower.”

“No problem. I was starting to turn into a prune anyway. I’m just glad I took my phone into the bathroom with me. Wouldn’t want my mother answering it,” she said.

“Speaking of your mother, did you inform her about lunch?” I asked.

“Not yet. I thought it would be better to mention it when you arrived,” she said.

That sounded like a bad plan from what she’d told me about her mother. But it was her call and I’d go along with it.

“I’m about to leave the office now. I’ll still be arriving at eleven-thirty. Will that give you time to get ready?” She had just gotten out of the shower. Most women that I knew had an entire ritual when it came to getting ready and wouldn’t be able to pull it off in this amount of time.

“Believe it or not, Mr. Blaze, I am not normally late.”

“Why don't you call me Damien? I’ll see you shortly,” I said, ending the call.

I left my office and let Dottie know that I was going to be out for the rest of the day. Even if it was only lunch with MaKayla and Venus, I wanted to be close just in case she needed me.

When I arrived at her hotel and knocked on the door, I ran through my role as a professor one more time. She should’ve gone with boyfriend. So much easier.

The door opened and it was Venus. “Hello, can I help you?” she asked.

“Hi. I’m professor Damien Blaze. I’m here to see your daughter, MaKayla.” The photo MaKayla had emailed me didn’t do Venus justice. I could see a clear resemblance now, even though the eyes and chin were different. But there was something even more important than that. I heard an accent, just a slight one, but it definitely wasn’t Canadian. MaKayla’s memories were right. Venus spoke another language.

Where are you from, Venus? What accent is that?

It wasn’t one I was familiar with, but maybe if I listened long enough, it’d come to me. Hopefully I could get her talking during dinner and find a way to record her voice and have it analyzed.

Coming here to meet her in person was the right decision. It was already paying off. But was I going to be able to get her talking when MaKayla had no luck? Probably not. But my gut usually picked up on things, and until I heard back from the FBI, it’s all I had to go on.

Venus looked me over from head to toe. “You were MaKayla’s professor?”

“I was. Now I teach in New York.” It’s what we had agreed upon and hopefully, she’d buy it. “I stopped by to ask her to lunch. But it would be wonderful if you could join us too,” I smiled.

MaKayla came up behind Venus and asked, “Who is it, Mom?”

“It’s your professor,” she replied, still blocking the doorway.

Venus was protective, or maybe she was hiding something she didn’t want me to see.

“Damien is here? Let him in, Mom.”

Venus opened the door wider so I could enter. “He said he’s here to take you to lunch,” she stated.

“Oh, that’s right. I forgot we had talked about lunch,” MaKayla replied.

“I was just inviting your mother to join us,” I stated.

“Oh, that would be great. Mom, Damien knows the city well and it will be so much easier for us to get around and find the place with the best desserts. You have to come with us,” she said.

“I thought we were going sightseeing today?” Venus stated.

I smiled. “I am free all day and at your disposal. Just tell me where you want to go and what you want to see.”
