Thankfully I had used my personal laptop at home to search for information on Tabiq. At least that would be a lot easier for me to explain. I could tell her that I was checking out the beaches for her in case she wanted to go there on our next vacation. But after this past vacation, I didn’t think she was going to want to go anywhere with me for a while.

Before going to serve more customers, there was one last thing I needed to do. Pulling my cell phone out of my back pocket, I deleted my text messages with Damien. Not that I believed she’d go as far as touching my personal property, but I wasn’t going to take any chances. And I sure in hell wasn’t going to use the office computer again for anything other than business.

Hopefully I’m going to have a lot more personal conversations with Damien.

CHAPTER16

Damien

“How the hell are we supposed to investigate if we can’t leave the fucking resort?” I snapped at Draven sitting across from me.

“Damien, I know you don’t want to hear this, but I think you’re approaching this all wrong. Instead of trying to get off the resort to get answers, why don’t we use my connection with Dean and ask questions. Who knows. Maybe he knows something.”

“And maybe his family is involved. Have you ever considered that?” I stated.

Draven shook his head. “Dean might be a hard ass when it comes to business, but he’s not a fucking bad guy. Hell, if you had joined us at the bar, you might have learned that for yourself. The Hendersons invested a lot of money in Tabiq. They are doing everything in their power to help these people.”

And that is something I can’t figure out why either. Why here? Why Tabiq?

“Have you asked why they are dropping cash here? Because to me, it still doesn’t make sense,” I stated.

“Dean said they are in need. They’ve suffered a lot. The Hendersons have the ability to help, so they are,” he replied.

No way in hell was it that simple. Even Brian had no answer as to why the Hendersons were so heavily involved. No way are they doing all this just out of the kindness of their heart. Not with what I know.“You want me to risk my client's life on that answer? They are here because the people need them?” I asked. “If you’re wrong, and Venus has been hiding MaKayla from them all this time, then exposing why we’re here could put her in danger.”

“I get it, but you haven’t shared with me any reason why you think it might be from the Hendersons,” Draven replied.

Risking MaKayla’s life was an honest fear I had. So much so that I had held back information even from Draven. “Venus has gone through great lengths to hide MaKayla. It must be from someone she felt was powerful and rich enough to find them. A Henderson not only fitsthatbill, but just so happens to also be heavily involved with the country of Venus’s birth. Yeah. I don’t believe in coincidences. I need to know how they are involved and how deep their control over this island goes. Fuck, Draven, for all we know, one of them paid her way out of Tabiq. Or maybe they know MaKayla’s father.”

Draven got up from the table and walked around the suite. Running his hand through his hair, he said, “I had dinner with Dean and his wife Tessa last night. She’s probably the sweetest person I’ve ever met. The way she talks about the family reminds me of our family. They love and support each other.”

“Tessa is not a Henderson by blood. What if they are keeping secrets from her, just like Venus is keeping them from MaKayla?” I asked.

He couldn’t deny that as a possibility. We dealt with liars all the time.

“That’s possible. He is very protective of her. But I don’t think he’s hiding the kind of shit you think he is.”

“What would you suggest I do? Trust him?” I asked.

He nodded. “It’s that or do what I would’ve done. Confront Venus. Tell her that you know what she’s done and let her explain why you shouldn't tell MaKayla what you know.”

It had crossed my mind. But Venus didn’t strike me as someone that could be threatened and give in so easily.

“That’s the problem. I don’t know as much as I need to. I have no fucking clue who her father is. Nothing.”

“How is that possible?” he asked.

“Even Brian is puzzled. I was hoping that the answer would be in Tabiq, but we’ve been here for three days, and I’ve got nothing but a tan. I already knew that Venus was Tabiqian, but now I have more proof than just her DNA. Her accent is spot on.”

“And you’re sure her father isn't Tabiqian as well?” Draven asked.

“No. Not based on the DNA results.”

“And you think it could be a Henderson?” he questioned.

“No. Their DNA wasn’t a match,” I replied.

His eyes widened. “You had them tested? Oh, that’s not a family you want to fuck with, Damien. And being all the way out here at their resort isn’t a place I want to be if they find out.”
