I love you, MaKayla. Live the life you want, the one you deserve.

Bennett caught up to me in the elevator. “Why don’t we grab a beer instead.”

I did have work, but a beer sounded good at that moment. “Not going to talk about babies, marriage, or love, are you?”

“Not unless you bring them up. But I have a flight leaving in a couple of hours, and I just want to relax while I can.”

“I thought you were staying the week with MaKayla and Venus?” I questioned.

“Nope. Zoey, my wife, is looking forward to seeing my face at home. Which means she has a ‘honey-do list’ waiting for me.”

“Want company on the flight?” I asked.

“You’re leaving?” he asked.

I nodded. “It’s time to go. Duty calls back in New York.”

“If you’re sure, then I’ll let the pilot know.”

“Great. Now, about that beer,” I said.

He laughed. “Local brewed. You can’t get anything better.”

I needed one, or five. I wasn’t taking the coward’s way out. I was giving her the space she needed right now. Venus knew it was the right thing to do. Too bad it hurt like hell. But then again, they do say love hurts.

CHAPTER25

MaKayla

I had been texting Damien since he left Tabiq two weeks ago, but the text messages weren’t the same. They lacked any real emotion. He said so many times how happy he was for me that I’d lost count. That’s great. He’s happy. But I am miserable.

I understood the fact that he couldn’t stay in Tabiq with me and mom while we got to know Steven, Aiza, and that cutie, Christina. He not only wanted to give us all the time we needed to get to know each other, but he said he had another client that needed his help. I never wanted to come between him and his work. But I had been hurt that he’d left without saying goodbye in person. He’d said that it was a last-minute decision. It was just my own selfishness that had wanted him to stay. I wanted him close so he could be part of the joy we were all feeling. But there was another family that needed him. Granted, I needed him too, but in a different way. It wasn’t life or death. Just felt like I was dying. But it was just heartbreak. I’d survive, or so Jenny told me. Then again, she also told me to quit crying about it if I wasn’t even going to fight for what I wanted.

I had wanted a family for over twenty years. I didn’t want to have to wait that long before I was reunited with the man I loved. But I still had no idea what he felt for me. When he looked at me, I’d say my feelings were reciprocated. I wish he would’ve voiced his, but then again, I never voiced mine either.

The plan was to tell him the night he showed up with mom. Then everything went haywire and there just didn’t seem to be a good time to tell him. He was either talking to Steven or to Bennett to make arrangements, or I was preparing for our trip with mom.

All were excuses, though valid, still just excuses. We should’ve made the time. What we had was something special. If we weren’t careful, it could fade away. I didn’t want to risk that happening.

It wasn’t easy, but Draven finally gave in and reached out to Damien asking him to meet at the office. It was the only place I could think of that would be private enough for us to talk. Of course, Draven had to send his secretary home for the day to give us that privacy.

There wasn’t a mirror in the office, but with any luck, Damien would remember this ‘get lucky’ blue dress and it would have the same effect on him. Not that this surprise visit was all about sex, because it wasn’t. I wanted it all. Getting it was another story.

I heard the door to the office open and Damien called out, “Are you here, Draven.”

“In here,” I replied, disguising my voice.

Sitting up on the desk, my legs crossed, I waited. When he entered, his jaw dropped.

“MaKayla, what are you doing here?” he asked, looking around for Draven.

“I have a list of reasons to be here.”

He stepped closer. “I’m all ears.”

The way he was looking at me, he was all eyes too. The dress was working. He couldn’t take his eyes off me.

“I never got to make that coffee.” I pulled a thermos out of my thermal bag. “Thought I would deliver one.”
