“Coffee. Okay. A long way to travel just to bring me coffee,” he said.

“Not just coffee. Also brought dinner,” I stated.

“Blackened salmon,” he teased.

“Very funny. But no. I brought something else. I believe this is your favorite.” Reaching into my bag I pulled out two wieners with the meat sauce, onions, mustard, and celery salt. I dreaded eating one, but for Damien, I’d do it.

He took the wieners from me, smiling. “They look delicious.”

Disgusting. But okay.

“Anything else on the list?” he asked.

“Yes. I don’t know if you realize this, but I hired you to find my family,” I said.

“I thought I did that,” he replied.

“You started, but it’s not complete,” I stated.

He nodded. “I couldn’t locate your mother’s family. I was hoping that once she was back in Tabiq, she would find them.”

I smiled. “Oh she did. Or rather, they found us. It’s funny how quickly word travels on that island. A quiet little visit with my uncle turned into us meeting President O’Connor. Who by the way is the most impressive woman I've ever met.”

“I don’t know. You’re pretty impressive yourself,” he said.

“Flattery will get you everywhere,” I smiled.

“Yes, but you came here because you are still missing a family member. Who are you looking for?” he asked.

“I’m looking at him.”

“Me?” he asked.

I got up, reached out, and grabbed him by his tie, pulling him closer. “Yes, you. I know you might not believe it, but you have become very important to me.”

“I feel the same way,” he replied.

“Then tell me. Tell me what you feel,” I said, not able to bring myself to tell him that I love him first.

“You want me to tell you how I feel about you?” I nodded. “Poets have spent hours trying to put it into words. Movies try to portray it. But none do it justice. They are simple little words that hold more meaning than any other, and still do not even begin to say what is in my heart. But know that I love you, MaKayla. I love you with all that I am.”

Flutters of joy filled me. “I love you too, Damien. But if you love me, why did you leave?” I asked.

“Because I love you,” he said.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” I stated.

“Yes it does. You needed time with your family. And I loved you enough to give you that time,” he said.

“But Damien, you don’t understand. You found my uncle and my cousin. And mom found my grandparents on her side. But I found you. If I had to go back and could only choose to have one in my life, I’d choose you.”

I meant it. Having my family meant a lot to me, but having Damien in my life brought joy to my heart like none other.

He pulled me into his arms and said, “And I choose you, mon amour. I choose you, today, tomorrow, and always.”

His kiss felt like home. It wasn’t a place, it was a feeling. When he broke the embrace he asked, “Is there anything else you’re missing?”

I smiled up at him and said, “Yes there is.”
