He cocked a brow. “Venus went back home?”

“You’re not as surprised as I am. I never thought she’d go back there. It was a place that...did not hold good memories for her.” I couldn’t imagine she went there willingly. Not with how afraid she’d been when I had picked her up years ago. I asked her to tell me about Tabiq and the only thing she ever said was that it was riddled with cruelty and corruption. Not a place I expected her to allow her daughter to choose for a wedding. “Are you sure this Damien Blaze guy is on the up and up?” I questioned. MaKayla looked happy in the photos, but could she be acting? Did she feel forced to marry this man? Hell, he looked closer to my age than hers.

He nodded. “I would stake my reputation on it.”

It wasn’t his reputation I was worried about. It was Venus’s life. I needed to see her for myself to make sure she was okay. I got up and headed for the door. “Keep me updated if you learn anything else.”

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Tabiq.”

“I wouldn’t advise doing that,” he said firmly.

“And why the hell not? Even you can’t confirm that she is safe. Until I know for sure, nothing and no one is going to stand in my way,” I growled.

His intercom buzzed. Jones pressed the button. “I am in a meeting.”

“I know, but it is someone from the FBI and he said he needs to speak to you now. He was very insistent. I didn’t know what to say,” his secretary informed him.

“Tell him to hold a minute,” Jones instructed her, then turned to me. “My gut says this has something to do with our search for Venus.”

“What would the FBI have to do with that? It’s not like she was in witness protection.” Unless something major had happened in the years I hadn’t gone to check on her.Fuck. Why did I stay away so long?

“There is no other case that I am currently working on in which I’ve come across so many roadblocks. If the FBI is involved, then I understand why this has been so...challenging,” he replied. “Sit. If he starts to talk about Venus, I’ll put you on the speakerphone so you can listen in. All I ask is that you keep your mouth shut. I don’t want him to know you are here. Understood?” I nodded and he hit the intercom again. “Send the call through.”

Biting my tongue wasn’t going to be easy if I didn’t like what he had to say. It won’t make a difference that Jones had told me to keep my mouth shut if Venus was in trouble.

He picked up the phone and said, “This is Jones. What is so urgent that couldn’t wait until I was finished with my client?”

I couldn’t hear the guy's response, but the fact that Jones looked at me, then pushed the speaker button, I knew he’d called it right.

“I’m not sure what you are talking about,” Jones replied. I knew he was trying to avoid some question he’d been asked.

“You know damn well what I’m talking about. The search has been traced back to your IP address. I want to know what you want with Venus Prada.”

“Is this an official request because normally you’d be showing up at my door with paperwork demanding I turn over my records,” Jones said, still not answering his question.

“Does it matter? Because if you need me on your doorstep, I’ll come. You won’t like it any better. Trust me.”

“And you haven’t answered my question, so I take it this is personal. I will tell you that my client is looking for Ms. Prada. That is all I am willing to share unless there is something you’d like to share with me. Like why are you involved?”

“She has family that has requested I look into this.”

I cocked a brow and mouthed,What family?Jones nodded.

“I wasn’t aware she had family except for a daughter,” he stated. “Are you working for MaKayla Prada? Or should I say, MaKayla Blaze, now?”

We both heard the half growl over the phone. The agent wasn’t pleased. “I would take my warning very seriously. Back the fuck off. Neither MaKayla nor Venus are any of your concern. Is that clear?” he snapped.

Jones replied. “Totally. Is there anything else before I hang up on you?”

“Yes. Who hired you?” he asked.

“No one you need to worry about.” Jones hit the button and disconnected the line. Then he turned to me. “Boy, you really pissed someone off.”

“Not the first time. Sure it won’t be the last. Let me know what I owe you for your time so far,” I said.

“And what are you going to do now? You know he’s not going to back off,” Jones reminded me.
