I melted against his hard muscular body. Through his thin white cotton shirt, I could feel his body tense at my closeness. Arching my back so my breast pressed against him firmly, he moaned.

Opening my mouth, I traced his lips, coaxing him to open. His tongue darted into my mouth again and again. I didn’t want it to stop, but I could feel him pulling away.No.

His lips left mine, and I thought this was the end again, but instead, I felt them on my jaw, then my neck, and back up to my lips. The kisses lasted for what seemed like an eternity, and then I knew that wasn’t going to be enough either.

The boat rocked so hard that if Declan hadn’t been holding me, I would have slipped from his lap.

“Wow. That was one hell of a wave,” I said, filled with panic, clinging to him.

“That was no wave,” he said. “Stay still. I need to check what happened.”

If he didn’t want to scare me, he wasn’t doing a good job. My heart was in my throat and the fact he was leaving me alone while he checked out what caused the boat to rock, wasn’t making me feel any better. But he was up before I could plead with him not to.

Before he even made it to the side of the boat, it happened again, this time even harder and I watched as Declan fought to remain standing.

“What the fuck!” he snapped.

Ditto.

“Declan, stop. Don’t go any closer. I don’t want you to fall overboard,” I screamed out in panic.

“Venus, I’m okay. I need to check the boat,” he said.

I’d never been so scared as I watched him once again go closer to the edge. For a third time, the boat rocked, but I knew something was different. This wasn’t a wave. But I had no idea what it was.

“Shit!”

His cussing was only adding to my fear level. “What...what is it?” I asked.

“A fucking orca whale rammed the boat,” he stated.

I could hear the concern in his voice. A whale ramming the boat wasn’t a good thing, but it didn’t flip us. We’re okay. At least I think we are. “Declan, what’s wrong? I can see that something isn’t right.”

He came over to me and grabbed my hands. Looking me in the eyes he said, “Venus, I don’t want you to panic, but I need you to put on a life jacket.”

Oh, that’s the number one reason to panic.

“Why?”

“I can see there is some damage. I don’t think we’re taking on water, but I can’t be sure. If the hull has been compromised, we could sink.”

The tears couldn’t be contained, and I was angry with myself. Declan needed me to be strong and right now, I was anything but.

“Declan, are we...going to be, okay?” I choked out.

“We will be, but not so sure about the boat. I must go call for help. I need you to stay where you are. Don’t move,” he said as he checked my life jacket to ensure it was secure.

There was no way I could move even if I wanted to. My legs never would’ve supported me. They were trembling as badly as my hands. I watched him grab his own life jacket before he went below deck. If I hadn’t known how serious this was before, that would have been enough of an indication.

I had no idea if the orca was still lingering around or if it was just waiting out there for another chance to ram us. How much more could this boat take? Declan made it sound as though we could be taking on water and sink.

It felt as though Declan had been below deck for hours, when in fact, it’d only been several minutes. He didn’t come all the way out. Instead, he called out to me, “Help is on the way. Are you doing, okay?”

How could I be? But he needed me to be. So, for the first time, I lied. “Yes. I’m okay. You do what you need to do.”So we live through this.

He nodded and went back down below deck. I was sure he was radioing people for help, but as I looked around, I didn’t see any land. Who was going to come to rescue us out here? How would they even find us?

This couldn’t be it. Not now when I had finally found Declan and we were...happy. This was just the beginning of our story. No stupid orca was going to ruin that for us, was it?
