He picked me up and he looked like he was just about to head towards the bathroom when the doorbell rang. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Who would come to visit us now?”

“Well, that is the problem with moving close to family. They stop in when you least expect it,” I half-joked.

He put me down and asked, “Which one of us is going to answer the door and tell them to go away?”

I laughed. “Well, I know my daughter, that wouldn’t stop her from coming in.”

He sighed. “Same with my mother.”

“So, we agree. We answer the door together,” I suggested.

Declan nodded and we went to the front door. When we opened it, we were both surprised. There was a group of people standing there.

“What are you all doing here?” I asked.

Damien and MaKayla walked into the house, and she said, “Throwing you a housewarming party. Which isn’t easy since I look like I’ve got a beach ball under this dress.”

“You look wonderful,” I said. MaKayla only had two months to go before she delivered. With her move from New York, I was shocked they had the time or the energy to come see us.

Declan’s parents walked in next, and his mother said, “Your daughter was kind enough to invite us to join in.”

“It’s good to see you, Mary. I hope the trip from Portland wasn’t too much for you,” I said and gave her a hug. It was nice seeing her walk without her cane. She’d been working so hard these past few months, and it was showing.

“I’d travel around the world for my family, and you my dear, are family now,” she replied.

She really was the sweetest. I had no idea what Declan was talking about when he said she could be overbearing and pushy. I just didn’t see it. Then again, I’d only known her for a few months.

“Honey, can you please get the folding chairs out of the garage,” I said. Since not all of our new furniture had been delivered, this wasn’t going to be the most comfortable party.

Before Declan left, his brother Rian showed up. “Sorry. I was parking the car. And carrying in all this food.” He turned to Declan and said, “There’s more in the car if you want to go grab it. You know Mom, she hears there is a party and she’s up all night cooking.

That concerned me. I knew the doctors said she was doing great, but I didn’t want her stressing for us I was just happy to see her getting around so well.

Rian placed all the food on the kitchen table. Thankfully we had that. Declan went out and grabbed the rest as he’d been asked.

“My goodness. There is enough food here to feed an army,” I said looking at it all. “Is that a bottle of champagne?” I asked.

“It is. Declan asked me to pick it up,” Rian said.

I turned around to ask him why but when I did, I didn’t look him in the eye. Instead, he was down on a bent knee, holding up a blue Tiffany box.

What the heck?

“Declan, what is going on?” I asked, shocked. Looking around, no one else seemed to be surprised by this. Even MaKayla was just standing by Mary, smiling.

I looked back down to Declan, and he was staring up at me.

“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. And remember the day I asked you to live with me?” I nodded and he said, “I don’t want to live with you. Well, I do, but I’ve decided that I’m a little old-fashioned. I love you, Venus, and I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?” he asked.

I looked around again, and then back to Declan. Not only was he proposing, but he had both of our families here to witness it. This was no last-minute thought. He’d planned it all. All for me.I’m the luckiest woman.

“Mom, say something,” MaKayla nudged.

Declan still held the open box with the most beautiful heart shape opal surrounded by diamonds. It was perfect. Just like him.

“Yes, Declan, I’ll marry you. But under one condition,” I said.

“What is that?” he asked.
