“That might be a problem,” Risk says as he enters the tent looking anxious. Risk was only recently patched into club, but he and I are close as brothers come. I know he always has my back. My gaze moves to Maddie and the deep look of concern on her face.

Guard’s voice booms. “What’s the problem?”

“A bunch of Juries and Relics are out there, fighting over who takes Maddie home tonight.” Risk looks concerned. “I have our guys ready but it’s gonna get ugly if we move.”

The rest of the band falls silent, though it’s probably because they’re staring at Maddie who goes pale as she wraps her arms around her waist. Paul moves to his sister’s side and puts an arm around her.

“Fuck! What the hell is wrong these fuckers?!” Guard explodes, pulling a hand over his face. “This is supposed to be a peaceful celebration. Can you find the heads and leads here tonight?”

“They’re spread out. That could take a while,” Risk answered.

“Baby,” Ava starts, “why can’t you just tell them she’s got a man? Can’t take what’s someone else’s, right?” Ava looks at Guard and rubs her belly. She knows how to work him—up to a certain point at least. “That way no one gets upset, they all respect the code, and we all move on.”

“Angel, first off, that’s not how we do things as a club. And second, even if we did, Maddie would have to agree and from there, it only gets more complicated than one little white lie.”

“Look, I just want to go home,” Maddie says, looking at Guard and then me. “War, you said I was going to be safe.”

“Come here, Maddie.” I hold out my hand to her. She stares at it for a few seconds before walking over. I pull her to my side. “We need to talk. You and me. Alone.” She looks up at me, bewildered. I speak directly to Guard. “I need a minute with Maddie. Could we get some privacy?”

Guard motions everyone outside and tags his wife’s hand to lead her out as well. He stops right in front of me and states, “You better be sure, man. This ain’t no joke.”

Paul looks hesitantly at his sister but leaves when he gets the nod from Maddie letting him know she is good.

“I’m sure.”

Guard pulls an inquisitive Ava out the tent.

Maddie watches everyone leave until I pull her around to face me.

“Maddie, we have a couple of options here. One, you let me lay claim to you. That would mean you belong to me. This is no light, bullshit thing. You say yes, and you are mine. Option two, we defend you and get you out of here, even if it may cause some drama with the MCs and create some extra work for Guard in the peace talks that he has been working at for the past few years. Either way I made a promise to protect you and I will.”

Maddie’s mouth hangs open in shock. She blinks. Closes her mouth then shakes her head. “Lay claim? You don’t even know me. I don’t know you. What does this even mean?” Her voice starts to shake, and her lips start to tremble. I see she’s about to shed tears.

“Calm down, Kitten. Would it be so bad? You need someone to protect you and if you haven’t noticed me staring, I think you’re beautiful. As a matter of fact, I wanted to lay to claim to you anyway. Of course, I was hoping to give you more time to get to know me first.” I take her hands in mine. “Tell me you haven’t thought of me since we met.” I knew I was pushing her, but we were running out of time and this was the perfect solution as far as I was concerned—I get Maddie and there’s no conflict.

“Just because I thought of you doesn’t mean anything…” Maddie starts.

“Yeah, it does.”

“This is crazy.” Maddie’s shakes her head. I hold her closer, wrapping my arms around her waist and she automatically places her hands on my chest to push me away.

I won’t let her.

“Kitten, you like me. I know you do. You know you do. You’re just scared.” She lowers her head. “Let me see those pretty eyes.” She slides her eyes back up to mine. “I’m gonna kiss you,” I say quietly. “We can see if we both like it. Then we can make up our minds.”

I have no doubts, but I figure this way she’ll feel like she has control over the situation. I tilt her head and hold her still then slowly lower my mouth to hers, licking across her lips. I can feel her stiffen.

“Open your mouth for me, Kitten. Let me taste you.” I feel her mouth open slightly and that’s when I move my tongue in and pull her fully against me. It takes her a moment to adjust then soften with a barely audible sigh. That’s when I feel her kissing me back. Her hands move up from my chest to wrap around my neck. God, she feels good against my body. So soft. So sweet. Her lips are like nectar to a starving man. I slide my tongue deeper into her mouth, enticing hers to duel with mine.

Now that I’ve tasted her, I can’t let her go. She is mine. But I pull back, ending our kiss. I still hold her close and watch as her eyes flutter open. She looks so beautiful, I just want to make her look that way over and over. She looks up at me.

“What do you think, Kitten?” I lower my lips to her cheek and give her soft kisses on her ear.

“I can’t think straight when you do that.” She breathed out. “What does ‘claiming’ mean for me?”

I continued to kiss her ear and neck. I can’t seem to help myself.

“It means that we’re a couple. Together in every way. You’ll stay with me and I’ll make sure you’re cared for and safe. We look after each other.” I thought this sounded innocent and sweet enough since I left out my intense desire to undress her and make her moan for hours until we’re too exhausted to move.
