“If you’ll excuse me, I need to go saddle the horses and prepare to check on the cattle,” Colby said. He tipped his hat to Kalie. “Ma’am, we’ll talk more later.”

She nodded.

“I’m going as well,” Preston said. “I’ll text you the number for the internet company.”

“You don’t have internet?”

“No,” Kalie said.

“Oh, come over to my ranch. We have the high-speed internet and you’re welcome to use it.”

Colby gave a chuckle. The man knew just how to tempt Kalie.

“This afternoon, I’m busy, but if they don’t get mine hooked up soon, I may take advantage of your offer.”

The man grinned. “Let’s sit down and talk about this property. I’m sure you’re ready to sell it and get on back to the big city.”

Colby knew he better walk away or he was going to be picking up that store-bought cowboy and putting him back in his big truck. The bigger the truck, the weaker the man.

Preston walked up beside Colby.

“Not a bad way to start the morning,” he said.

“No, but I told you Jim would be showing up, and sure enough, here he is.”

“I’m hoping he’ll stick his size seven boot in his mouth and she’ll tell him to crawl back in his monster truck and go home,” Preston said.

“Let’s hope. You know, I really did like the way you explained our little town to her. Shame she won’t stay and experience our way of life.”

Preston grinned. “One step at a time, brother. One step at a time.”

CHAPTER8

The next day, Kalie called her friend Stacy.

“You are not going to believe what I learned yesterday,” she said.

“Your father’s family are aliens?” her friend spouted off. “And that’s why he never told you about them.”

Kalie laughed. This was what she loved about the woman. Her irreverent sense of humor often made Kalie feel better about whatever was going on in her life.

It was the reason they were such close friends.

Plopping into a soft chair, she glanced about the house. “The place is a small mansion that needs some updates, but it’s a really nice home. But the biggest piece of news is that this town and my grandparents believe in two men with one woman.”

“Shut the fuck up,” she said into the phone. “No way. Your grandparents? Ewww…old people sex.”

Laughing, Kalie still found it hard to believe herself. “Well, their partner died ten years ago and it had only been my grandfather Will and grandmother Lillian for the last ten years. But I’m wondering if this is why my father never told me about them.”

Her father had been very old school when it came to what happened in the bedroom or between a man and woman. No premarital sex. She could count on one hand the number of times she’d witnessed her parents kissing.

“Are you certain that Grandpa Will was really your grandfather? Maybe the other man was your father’s sperm donor. And with two men, why didn’t they have more children? You would think you would have a whole passel of cousins somewhere.”

It was a legitimate question, but she wasn’t certain she would ever learn the answer since they were both gone.

“There’s a woman in town that I plan on seeing who Preston and Colby think could tell me why my father left and never returned.”

There was a moment of silence. “And who are Preston and Colby?”
