This afternoon something had shifted between them and Preston wasn’t certain what. It wasn’t Colby’s story. Yes, that had been heart wrenching, but there was a difference in Kalie.

The woman oozed with confidence and he saw in her eyes a certainty he’d not seen there before.

CHAPTER14

“It’s been a hell of a day and I’m hot,” Kalie said. “I’m going in the air-conditioned house, take a bath, and then I’ll be waiting for you. It’s time that both of you took me at the same time.”

Mouth gaping, Colby watched her pick up her clothes and then scramble down the ladder.

She was the one pushing that they both take her and she wanted it tonight. He feared this meant she was leaving soon. The deal was done, and she would be returning to New York.

Damn, double damn. And this was after he’d told her things that he’d never mentioned to anyone. After he went to prison, he gave up and locked that night away.

With a sigh, he watched her go into the house.

“Let’s grab a shower and then go on over,” Preston said.

Colby glanced around at the hay they had left to move. His heart wasn’t in it tonight. Glancing at his watch, he realized it was only four o’clock. It was early.

“Maybe we should offer to take her out to dinner,” Preston said. “Maybe then she would tell us what happened at the lawyer’s.”

Colby sighed. “All right. But first I want a shower. I’m hot and sweaty and I want tonight to be perfect.”

Why he had such a bad feeling, he didn’t know, but he feared she would soon be going back to the Big Apple, never to return to Blessing. And that made his chest ache.

It wasn’t what he wanted at all.

Thirty minutes later, he walked into the house. Preston was still getting dressed. Kalie was nowhere in sight. It was then that he saw the paperwork lying on the table alongside her purse.

Unable to resist, he opened the folder. The amount Jim White was willing to pay for this place was staggering. He’d never seen that much money.

“Son of a bitch,” he said as he flipped through the pages of the contract. And then his heart stopped when he saw Jim’s signature.

She’d sold him the place. It was a done deal. That jerk had offered her enough money that she couldn’t refuse him.

And could he really blame her? She’d be set for life.

Just then Preston walked through the door. “Where’s Kalie?”

“I don’t know,” he said, his emotions gripping him. “She sold the ranch.”

Preston glanced at the contract.

“I really hoped she would see through Jim White, but he offered her three million fucking dollars.”

Rage filled him and he closed his eyes. “I can’t do this. I can’t fuck her when I know she didn’t give a rat’s ass about us.”

After everything, she had sold them upriver. He didn’t even know if they were going to be getting the bonuses that Lillian promised them. Once again, he’d started to care about someone and they had screwed him over.

Preston sighed and shook his head.

“I was praying that she would stay,” he said.

Just then Kalie walked down the stairs, wearing the sexiest negligee he’d ever seen, but he didn’t care.

“What are you doing?” she asked when she saw them rifling through the contract.

“You bitch, you sold us out,” Colby said.
