“What? No,” she said her face confused.

“It’s right here in this contract. Jim White is getting the Sweet B Ranch. He’s going to make it into a subdivision with ranchettes. He’s the biggest jerk in town and you sold Will and Lillian’s ranch to him.”

Her face started to turn red.

“It’s my decision,” she said. “I inherited this ranch.”

“Yes, it’s your decision,” Preston said. “We were just hoping for a better outcome.”

“At least we hoped you would sell it to someone who loved the place and would care for it as much as your grandparents did,” Colby said as he paced the floor. “I knew better than to get involved with you. You’re nothing like Lillian. You’re just a snooty bitch from New York City who had no idea the value of the property she’d inherited. Why is it the lucky ones get an inheritance?”

She hurried down the stairs and she stomped toward Colby. “Look here. I’m not a snooty bitch, and I didn’t know my grandparents because my father was a jerk to Lillian and Will. And it’s my inheritance. I’ll do what the hell I want with it.”

Preston sighed and walked over to Kalie. “We were hoping you would want to stay and be with us. We’re disappointed. I wish you would have told us when you first got home.”

A snarl came from Kalie. “Get out. And don’t come back. We’re done,” she said.

“Good,” Colby said. “We’ll pack our bags and be long gone before that asshole comes to take possession of the ranch. Right now, your grandmother and grandfather are probably rolling over in their graves. Of all people to sell their land to.”

Tears welled in Kalie’s eyes and she clenched her fists.

“Leave now,” she screamed.

He’d never seen her so angry.

Picking up the folder, he tossed it to her. “Enjoy your millions.”

Then he turned and stomped out the door, his pulse pounding, rage filling him. He knew better than to get on his motorcycle at this moment because he would take way too many chances.

Somewhere on the road, he would be splattered.

He hurried into the bunkhouse and began to pack his bags. He had to get out of here tonight.

Preston walked in. “I kept hoping she wouldn’t sell.”

“Well, you were wrong. Jim White will be our new boss.”

“Oh hell no,” Preston said. “I’m not working for that asshole.”

“Me either. In fact, I want to leave tonight. Will you take me into town before the bank closes and let me pull out all my cash? I’m not staying here.”

Preston sighed. “Let’s go. The bank closes within an hour.”

CHAPTER15

As soon as they walked out the door, Kalie collapsed onto the couch, tears rolling down her cheeks. Didn’t they see that she had not signed the contract? Didn’t Colby realize that she didn’t want to leave?

These were her men. She wanted to remain here with them, but they had believed the worst about her. Maybe she should have pointed out that she hadn’t signed the contract, but they had been so mean.

They believed the worst about her and that hurt more than anything.

Well, she wasn’t going anywhere and now she was even questioning that decision. She had hoped by staying here that they would eventually commit themselves to one another. But how could she do that if they didn’t trust her?

Picking up her cell phone, she started to call them but then put her phone down. She thought about calling Nathan and decided no. Just no. She wasn’t going to make a decision when she was so distraught.

After listening to Colby’s story, she’d realized that she loved these men. In the two weeks since she’d been here, she’d fallen in love with them and her heart belonged to them. No one else, and she didn’t want to return to New York.

This was where she belonged. But now the question quickly became did they belong here with her?
