Sighing, she dialed her friend’s number, tears still trickling down her face.

“Stacy,” she said when she answered.

“What’s wrong? Are you all right? Do I need to call the police?”

“No,” she said sobbing. “I don’t know what to do.”

For the next ten minutes, her friend listened to her. When Kalie told her how Colby had reacted to the contract, she growled into the phone.

“Does the man not know that a contract is not good until both parties have signed? Good grief, this is basic law.”

But Colby had never been exposed to contracts, she realized. No, she wasn’t making an excuse for him, but Preston should have seen there was only one signature on that contract and it wasn’t hers.

“Stacy, what am I going to do? I love them. I thought I had found two men I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, and now I’m wondering if I made the right decision.”

Sitting on the couch, she gazed about the house.

“Take a deep breath. There has been enough emotional reaction for one evening. You said they were leaving.”

“Yes,” she said. “I heard Preston’s truck leave about thirty minutes ago.”

There was silence for a few minutes on the phone. “They’re gone for good?”

“Let me check,” Kalie said.

She was still in her sexy negligee, but she walked outside and went to the bunkhouse. Colby’s motorcycle was still parked under the awning. When she went inside, she saw that they both had pulled out their suitcases and were filling them.

“They’re gone, but their suitcases are still here,” she said. “Dear God, I hope they’re not going to Jim White’s residence. Colby will kill him.”

As angry as she was that they had not listened to her, she didn’t want Colby hurting someone and going back to prison. The man didn’t deserve that.

“Let me call you right back. I’m going to call my attorney,” she said.

Dialing his personal cell number, she was thankful Nathan picked up right away. “Have you changed your mind?”

Not at all.

“No, but Colby saw the contract and is under the false belief that I am selling the ranch. He and Preston left furious at me. I’m worried for Jim White’s sake. I don’t want them to hurt him.”

Nathan sighed. “Sometimes Preston and Colby can be damn stubborn. Let me see if I can reach Preston on the phone and find out where they’re at.”

“Thank you, Nathan,” she said. “But don’t tell them I’m staying.”

He chuckled. “Why do I get the feeling that two men are going to be getting hell tonight for not believing in you.”

“You got it,” she said. “They assumed and we all know what that means.”

Laughter came over the phone. “Kalie, you’re going to fit in very well here. I’m glad you made the decision to stay.”

“Thank you,” she said. “Now go find my men and tell them to get their asses back to the ranch.”

She disconnected the line and then called Stacy back.

“He’s going to try to find them,” she said. “Why are men so damn stubborn?”

Stacy laughed. “I wish I knew.”

There was silence for a moment. “I’m happy for you, but I’m so disappointed that you’re not coming back to New York.”
