I gasp. “A bombing? What do you mean? Where?”

His face looks pained as he says, “His motorcade was hit.”

I stop breathing. I can’t even form any words right now.

“Communication has been cut with his Secret Service team on the ground. There’s no update at the moment.”

I blink a few times. “So we don’t know if he’s alright?”

He nods. “We don’t know.”

My eyes dart back and forth as I try to process this information, and then my stomach goes cold. “Was he alone?”

Bode looks pained. His voice comes out barely a whisper. “No, it was the whole family.”

It feels like the air I’m breathing isn’t going into my lungs. I’m drowning right now. My chest is so tight it hurts.

Bode pulls me closer and puts his hand on my back. “You’ve got to breathe.”

I can’t feel anything. Not sadness. Not fear. Not anger. I’m just completely numb, and my brain feels like it’s running at half speed. My body doesn’t even remember how to breathe.

“Juno, breathe.” He takes a big inhale and lets it out slowly. “Do it with me.”

I try to follow what he’s doing until my body starts to do it on its own.

“Where are we going?” I finally ask.

“Closest airport,” he answers.

“Why?”

He’s rubbing circles with his hand on my back. “They want you in the air, heading back to D.C.”

While I’m thinking this over, he continues, “There’s a private plane waiting. They are prepared to leave as soon as we arrive.”

“Everyone else?” I ask.

“I’m assuming the same for them.”

His phone rings, and he shows me the screen. “Eli.”

I nod.

He answers and holds the phone to his ear. “Yeah. We’re on our way to the airport.”

Eli talks for a moment and then Bode says, “I’m staying with her. I’ll make sure she gets home.”

He takes a deep breath while Eli speaks and then he says, “Be safe. We’ll see you in D.C.”

As soon as he hangs up, I say, “Where are they?”

“Taking off. The other group is already in the air. They were both closer to an airport than us.”

I nod. I can’t believe this is happening. When James first talked about becoming President, things like this would keep me awake at night, but I’ve just gotten used to him being President. I’ve grown accustomed to the risks.

Bode squeezes my arm and says, “They’ll let us know as soon as they have information.”

I pull out my phone to check the news. He puts his hand on mine and says, “I don’t think you want to do that.”
