Chapter Thirty-Seven

Bode

Iwatch a video ofthe attack online on my phone. I’m sure Juno will watch it someday, but if I have anything to do with it, it won’t be today. A huge explosion goes off right as the President’s car is passing. It flips. The President’s car fucking flips. If I didn’t know they were okay, I would have been certain everyone in that vehicle had died. I honestly don’t know how they survived. I’m really glad Juno didn’t watch the news coverage before we got word from the Secret Service.

I look up at O’Shay and say, “It flipped.”

He nods solemnly. “It took them a few minutes to get everyone out of the car.”

Fuck. “How did someone get a bomb that close to them?”

He gives me a grim look. “I’d love to know.”

I’m sure there will be a massive investigation. Jesus. This was no amateur act – we’ve gone to war over less. My stomach sinks – I pray this wasn’t an act of war. It feels like a pivotal moment in American history like Pearl Harbor or the Kennedy assassination.

I watch the video again. It’s worse the second time somehow. I wonder how bad their injuries are. I know they said they were fine, but I can’t imagine you walk away from something like that unscathed.

Juno starts to stir. She blinks a few times and looks around confused. I quickly close my phone and put it away. She sits up and groans. “I feel like I have a hangover.”

I place my hand on the center of her back. “Want some water or coffee?”

“Yes. Both.”

I motion for the flight attendant to bring her some drinks. Juno takes in a shaky breath beside me. “Any updates?”

“I think your family has been texting. You may want to check your phone. Everyone else has landed already. We’ve got another hour.”

She picks up her phone and reads through the texts. A tear slides down her cheek. “Did you watch it?”

I take my thumb and brush back the tear from her face. “I did. I don’t think you should. Or at least not right now.”

She nods. “I wasn’t planning on it. I imagine I won’t be able to avoid it forever. It’s going to be everywhere.”

She raises her eyes to me. “The kids. Poor Vivi. Can you imagine anything more terrifying?”

I shake my head. “No. I really can’t.”

“Do they know who did this?” she asks.
