He watches me in silence for a few minutes and then says, “You didn’t use the safe word again. Was that okay?”

“I loved it. I would have told you if I didn’t.”

I open one eye and look at him. “You like to be in charge, don’t you?”

He looks a little bashful, and I say quickly, “I promise I loved it. You can choke me any day.”

A hearty laugh comes out of him, and he rests his head on my shoulder. “Can you move yet?”

I close my eye again. “No. You’ve paralyzed me.”

He inches his body toward mine and drapes his arm over my back. Seth never fucked me like that. Frankly, Seth didn’t fuck me at all – or make love to me. We had sex. That’s it. And it was...fine. He could get me off. Not every time, but most times.

Seth never made my toes curl. He never made me see a blinding light. He never paralyzed me with his dick.

“What are you thinking about?” Bode asks.

I open my eyes and say, “You’re a really good lover.”

He smiles. “So are you. Maybe we just work well together?”

I roll over to my side so I can look at him. “I’m sure the other women you’re with are not disappointed. I doubt it’s just our chemistry.”

There’s a flash of emotion across his face I can’t place, and he says with a low voice, “You know I don’t like to talk about other people when I’m in bed with you.”

“But you’ll talk about Seth?” I laugh.

He smiles. “He doesn’t count.”

I slide my hand under my head and lean on my elbow. “Why not?”

“You never liked him.”

I gasp. “What are you talking about? Of course, I liked him.”

He studies me. “You didn’t. That’s okay. We have relationships for lots of reasons, but he didn’t do it for you. I could tell.”

I feel my face redden.

“What happened between the two of you?” he asks.

I’m a bit embarrassed about everything. I don’t really want to get into it.

“Junie, what happened?” His eyes look worried.

I cast my eyes down. “He was cheating on me.”

“That dude? The one from Christmas?” He sits up. “He thought he could do better than you?”

I look up at him. “Apparently. Someone from his office. Another accountant.”

He runs his hands over his mouth. “Maybe he needed like sexy math talk in bed, and you just couldn’t provide that,”

I shake my head.

He turns serious. “That fucking sucks though. I’m sorry. Are you okay?”

I nod. “Yeah. I’m over him. The funny thing is – I thought he was the safe choice. I know he was boring, but I thought that meant he wouldn’t hurt me.”
