He places his hand on my cheek. “You don’t have to settle like that.”

“I don’t plan to again,” I say, firmly.

“Did I fuck him out of your system?” he asks.

I lean in for a kiss. “That’s exactly what you did.”

Chapter Forty-Nine

Bode

“Where are we going?” she asks as we drive out of town.

“A fjord.”

She whips her head my direction. “A fjord. Are we driving to Norway?”

I laugh. “No, there’s a fjord about two hours north of Quebec City.”

“Here? In Canada?”

I nod.

She leans back on her seat and says, “I had no idea. I’ve never been this far north before. Have you?”

“Yeah. I’ve been to Iceland and a few Scandinavian countries.”

“Sounds nice. There’re so many places I want to go,” she says. “I’m excited about this. I’ve never been to a fjord.”

I reach over and squeeze her hand. “It’s an adventure.”

She flicks her eyes to me and says, “It always is.”

We talk the whole way there about life. She tells me about school and her friends. She asks me questions about working with Eli and our business. She wants to know all about my childhood. I can’t imagine running out of words to say to her. As the scenery changes, we fall silent, looking at the mountains rising around us. I’m just as happy sitting quietly in her presence as I am talking.

Once we’re parked, we follow the trail to the fjord. As soon as we can see it, she covers her hand over her mouth. “Oh my god, this is stunning.”
