“I’ll put together this cabinet, but I want to tell you one thing tonight and you have to listen,” I say.

She eyes me suspiciously. “That’s it?”

I nod. “That’s it.”

“Deal.” She holds up the bag. “I’m going to heat this up while you work.”

She comes back out a bit later with two wine glasses in her hands. “You’re almost finished? That would have taken me a whole weekend.”

I laugh. “I told you. I’m really good at doing this. It’s because I had an unhealthy obsession with building blocks as a kid.”

“That does not surprise me in the least.”

“Well, I still have an unhealthy obsession with them, but that’s another story.”

She hands me the wine glass. “Thank you. This is a huge help. You hungry?”

I nod. As we eat, I ask her about her work and the move. She’s very polite but doesn’t really open up to me. As she’s cleaning up after dinner, I finish the little odds and ends with the cabinet and clean up in the living room.

She walks out of the kitchen and says, “A deal is a deal. What do you want to say?”

I take a deep breath. “When we were together, you kept saying you thought I was a good lover.”

She laughs loudly. “This is what you want to tell me? That you’re good in bed?”

I hold my hands up. “You promised to listen.”

She closes her mouth.

“You kept saying you thought it must be like this for every woman I’m with.”

She shrugs. “Sure.”

“It’s not.”

She frowns. “What do you mean? You’re telling me you couldn’t satisfy other women? I have a hard time believing that.”

I give her a little smile. “I can satisfy other women. You’re right. I am a good lover.”

“Bode, I’m confused.”

“But it’s different with you – completely different. That’s what I’m trying to say. What you felt – that’s special. That’s just us.”

She falls completely still.

I continue, “That chemistry we have. The way I feel kissing you. The way your body feels like it’s made for mine and mine for yours. The way I crave you and can’t imagine ever tiring of you. I’ve never had that with anyone else. Just you.”

She looks stunned.

“That’s it. I’m coming back tomorrow to do that bookcase. Do you have a spare key? It’s going to take longer. I can start in the afternoon.”

She blinks a few times and then says, “Sure.”

After rummaging through a drawer, she hands me a key. As I’m taking it, I say, “I’m doing this so I can tell you something else tomorrow. Deal?”

She nods slowly like she’s still in shock. “Deal.”
