Chapter Seventy-Four

Bode

We’re gathered in theliving room after Christmas dinner. A few of the small ones are down for naps. A few of the bigger small ones are chasing MarryMe around. I’m drinking with the men on one side of the room, but I keep stealing glances at Juno.

“Are you excited about this travel show?” Will asks.

“Can’t wait.”

“Will you be in it at all?” Ethan asks.

“Yeah. A little. It will mostly be her, but I’ll make some cameos.”

“Like Jeffery?” Kip asks.

Keene wrinkles his nose. “Who the hell is Jeffery?”

Declan huffs. “Barefoot Contessa. Don’t you know her husband, Jeffery? One of the greatest love stories of our time.”

Will laughs. “It really is. Olivia is obsessed with them.”

“And Elizabeth,” James says.

Declan nods. “Maggie too.”

“I had no idea,” Keene says.

“Yeah. I guess I’ll be Jeffery,” I say.

The conversation moves on, and we talk politics and sports for a bit and then the group breaks up until it’s just me and the President. We stand awkwardly for a minute.

“Thank you for letting her make her own decisions,” I say.

He nods. “She needed to. I’m just happy she told us how she was feeling.”

“I’m glad you listened.”

He chuckles. “I’m glad she picked you. I wasn’t too sure when she went to see you after Italy and then you didn’t get together.”

I set my drink down quickly. “You knew she came to see me after Italy?”

“And the trip you took after that. Of course, I knew. She had a Secret Service detail.”

Obviously, I knew about her Secret Service detail, but Juno always insisted that they didn’t report to her brother what she was doing.

“I’m a hard man to keep secrets from,” he says.

“I’ve gathered.”

“I have always wondered one thing though,” he says before taking a drink.

I’m afraid to hear this question.

“You were going to her room that night after Declan and Maggie’s wedding, weren’t you?”

I can’t help but grin. He knows – there’s not point in lying. “I was.”

“I thought so. Did you go after we talked?”
