I think my mouth is probably hanging open. I start blinking back tears. I’m not sure why this is so emotional for me, but I’m feeling a rush of conflicting feelings. I take a deep breath and push it down. I feel Bode’s eyes on me, so I turn and walk to the other side to look at the view from that direction. When I return, the rest of the group has made it to the top.

“Oh my god,” Zadie says. “I nearly died.”

“I need to start incorporating stairs into my workouts, apparently,” Olivia laughs.

Brooklyn walks over to Declan and gives him a little half hug. “Thanks for convincing us to do this.”

“The inside of the Basilica and then the crypt.”

“Will there be gelato after that?” I ask.

“Absolutely,” Declan says with a smile.

Chapter Nine

Bode

“It’s a little downthis way,” Juno motions us to follow her. It’s just Keene, Eli, and me. All of the rest took the babies back to the villa for naps.

She turns down a street and then furrows her brow.

“Are we lost?” Eli asks.

“What do they say about all roads leading to Rome?” she says.

Keene lets out a loud laugh. “We’re already in Rome. I don’t think it applies to this situation.”

She walks back to the street sign and then looks down the adjacent street.

Eli holds up his phone. “Give me the address, and I’ll see if I can find it.”

She brings her phone over, and then they huddle together for a few minutes.

Eli points back the way we just came. “We need to backtrack.”
