“It’s been smoking for thousands of years,” I counter.

“Surely, they can detect if it’s getting more active, right?” she says, nervously looking toward it.

I shrug. I honestly have no idea.

She looks back at me and says, “The view from the mountain top was amazing though, wasn’t it?”

“One of the most beautiful in the world,” I agree.

She smiles. “I’ll never forget it.”

My stomach flutters a little, goddammit.

“Neither will I,” I answer truthfully.

We walk in silence for a bit and then she says, “Have you ever been with a sex worker?”

I nearly choke. “What?”

She stops walking and looks at me. “I’m just curious. I wouldn’t judge.”

I cough a few times. “No. I haven’t paid for sex.”

She scans my face and then says, “Yeah. I guess you wouldn’t need to.”

I wrinkle my nose. “I’m not sure what you mean by that.”

She waves her hands in front of me. “You’re a super-rich, good looking guy – why would you pay for sex?’

She’s making me terribly uncomfortable right now. “Plenty of men do.”

Why am I encouraging this conversation to continue?

She laughs. “I know. That’s why I asked.”

“No. I haven’t,” I say, firmly.

“Would you?” she asks.

I don’t hesitate. “No.Would you?”

She hesitates, and my eyes nearly pop out of my head. “What? You would?”

She gives a one shoulder shrug and says, “I don’t know. I don’t have any moral objection to it. I definitely don’t think it should be illegal. What’s the point in criminalizing it? It would be much safer for women if it was legal.”

“How so?”

“Well, in the U.S., fifty sex workers will disappear and be murdered by a serial killer before we even notice that there’s a serial killer on the loose. That doesn’t happen in Amsterdam where it’s legal. The women are protected and in safe locations. People would notice if one went missing – much less fifty. Also, they test regularly for STDs. It would be better for the general population if we just regulated it.”

“How pragmatic of you,” I say. I don’t disagree with what she’s saying.

“I think that’s the rational and mature response. It’s referred to as the oldest profession for a reason. It’s not going away.”

I chuckle. “Good point. But would you go?”

She tilts her head from side to side. “Probably not, but never say never.”

I laugh loudly. “Juno, you are full of surprises.”
