“In the dark?” Keene asks.

“I guarantee you Juno is going to try to sneak out. I had O’Shay stand by her door and Rodriguez is at the front door. I promise you she’s going to climb out her window and try to come this direction.”

Keene groans. “Is this really necessary?”

My thoughts exactly.

Eli points back toward the restaurant. “We don’t know that guy, Keene. There’s a lot of people who would like to get her and hurt her. You know it’s a real threat.”

“It isn’t because you want to keep her from hooking up with him?” I ask. I shouldn’t. It’s none of my concern.

His head jerks back. “No, why would I care about that? She can make her own decisions in that regard, but if she’s going to put herself in harm’s way, I’m not going to sit by.”

I chew on the side of my cheek and mull this over. I agree with what he’s saying about she’s not just a regular twenty-two year old. She’s worth a lot if someone were to kidnap her. Her brothers are worth billions. Ransom demands would be insane. She’s valuable to people who would want to kill her as an act of political retaliation or terrorism too, but she’s also a person. A person, who frankly, didn’t choose this life.

“What about Keene?” I ask. “Or you for that matter? Aren’t you just as valuable?”

They both scrunch of their faces. “Doubtful,” Eli says. “Plus we could hold our own a little better than Juno. She weighs like eighty pounds less than me.”

“You really think you could take on some sort of trained assassin or mercenary?” I ask.

Eli shakes his head. “No. Which is why I’m not trying to sneak off.”

“Would you let her bring a guy back here?” I ask.

Eli shoots me a look. “Not a stranger. How would that be safe?”

I shrug.

He’s looking at me suspiciously. “Why do you care?”

I inhale deeply through my nose. “I would find it frustrating to be locked up like that.”

He frowns. “Locked up? No one is locking her up.”

I laugh. “Eli, she literally has guards posted outside her room and what are we doing? We’re guarding this exit.”

He scowls. “I’m just trying to keep her safe.”

I sigh. “I know.”

He opens his mouth but before he can say anything Juno comes tiptoeing around the corner, her shoes in her hand.

She freezes when she sees us, her mouth turned down.

“Hey Juno, were you coming to hang out with us?” Eli says. “Take a seat.”

She just glares at him.

“Weird choice to come out your window. Your door works just fine,” he adds.

“Fuck you, Eli,” she says. It looks like she might start crying.

“There’s no guy that’s worth risking your life for,” Eli fires back.

She winces. “I’m not risking my life. I’m just trying to live it.”

“Sneaking out without your Secret Service agents? What would you call that?” he says.
