“Yeah. I promise.”
Eli and I both look up to see Juno coming outside with a coffee in her hand. “What are you making Bode promise?”
Eli grabs the back of his neck and says, “Don’t be mad, but I have to leave.”
She sits down across from us at the table. “Leave?”
“Work stuff. I’m needed in California.” I pour her a cup of coffee and hand it over.
She frowns. “Oh.”
“Bode is going to stay with you,” Eli says.
Her eyes flash to mine. She’s pissed off. I don’t blame her.
Eli holds his hands up like he’s surrendering. “Juno, don’t make a big thing out of it. I know you two aren’t best friends or anything, but...”
She cuts him off, “I don’t need a babysitter, Eli.”
He scoffs and she ignores him. “I’m an adult, Eli. I know you have it stuck in your head that I’m still a kid, but I’m not.”
“Okay, fine whatever. Just stay out of trouble, and don’t make Bode’s life miserable.”
Juno blows on her coffee and looks at me over the steam. “Oh, I definitely can’t promise that.”
She flashes a mischievous smile at Eli and says, “Don’t worry about a thing. Bode has this under control.”
Her words send tingles down my spine and makes my dick twitch at the same time. Fuck me. I should really find an excuse not to do this.
Eli points at her. “I’m serious, Juno. Behave.”
She stands up and says, “Maybe I’m not the one you have to worry about?”
Eli laughs loudly. “What are you talking about? Bode? Are you saying I should be worried about Bode? You said you think he’s boring.”
She shrugs and gives me a little look. I know exactly what she means, and I’m feeling guilty as fuck.
“Don’t be a dick to him, okay? He’s doing me a favor.”
“Oh, don’t worry about Bode. I promise not to be a dick to him,” she says before walking back in the house.
“What the fuck,” Eli mutters. “I’m really sorry.”
I can’t change the subject fast enough, so I say, “Fill me in on this work stuff.”
He nods and starts to catch me up.
Later that day as Juno and I are watching Eli’s car pull away, she turns to me and says, “Well Bo, this should be fun.”
