“Nick talk. It’s over.”
I adjust my Rolex.
“Bobby I’m sorry! Paul, please forgive me!”
“C’mon, Nick, we don’t have all night!”
“You’re pathetic!” Paul Jr. yells at Nick.
“Capo, Gia wanted to marry Bobby. She did not want to marry Paul Jr.” Nick talks only to my father. He refuses to accept me as capo even when he is about to die.
“Bobby! Bobby! Bobby! I am so sick of everyone wanting Bobby!” Paul Jr. screams.
“Gia only agreed to the marry Paul Jr. because I promised her, he would be capo. She wants to be a capo’s wife. She deserves to be the mafia queen of Chicago!”
What the fuck?
“You should not have done that Nick.” My father tells him.
My father loves Nick like a brother.
“This could have all been avoided, Papa! If you had made me capo instead of Bobby!” Paul Jr. exclaims.
“It is tradition, Paul! The retiring capo always appoints his eldest son to take his place! You had no business making Bobby capo. He is too young. New York was not happy. I warned you. You would not listen.” Nick pleads.
My father crosses his arms over his chest and gets right in Nick’s face, “I told you Nick, Paul wasn’t ready. He doesn’t have the business sense that Bobby has!” My father turns to Paul Jr., “Pauley my son, I was not trying to punish you. You and Bobby will both be Capo now. Together, you will run the Outfit.”
Paul Jr. is still angry.
“Why didn’t you make Gia marry Bobby? She would have been a capo’s wife then. You could have given me Gwen Fielding!”
I flinch at Paul Jr.’s suggestion. Gwen is mine.
“You and Gwen would not have been a good fit. Gwen is perfect for Bobby. Besides you can’t run a real estate empire like Bobby can.”
Paul Jr. punches Nick in the face and screams, “Nick you fucked her, didn’t you? You fucked my wife!”
What? Is that what this mess is all about?
“I love her!” Nick sobs with blood running down his chin.
“You have a wife and kids, Nick!” My father exclaims.
“No, my wife left me. We are getting a divorce.”
“Why Nick?” I ask.
Wow. He fucked Gia.
“Gia is so beautiful. So unhappy. Paul Jr., all you do is cheat on her. Humiliate her. I feel bad for her. She is lonely. Vulnerable. She makes me feel young again. She is everything to me. I love her and she loves me! Please, Bobby, don’t hurt her. I know you are going to kill me.”
This is why my father did not make Paul Jr. capo - he is too easily manipulated. He cannot read people. He didn’t even know his wife was having an affair. He is careless. Reckless. Selfish. Hot Tempered. He is not a strategist like me. We are both capos of the Outfit now. Paul Jr. needs to grow up fast. If not, I will watch over him like a hawk. Keep him in line. He will not drag down the Vincenzio name.
“What else, Nick?” I ask. “What did Gia promise you besides her undying love? I know you were working with the Antonovich brothers!”
“Adan and Bogun were working together. After they killed you Bobby, Paul Jr. would become capo. Gia would be a capo’s wife. I would remain consigliere. Gia and I would continue our affair. Adan and Gia would make Paul Jr. their puppet. They would run the Outfit. The Outfit would lose power which will make the New York families and the Bratva happy.” Nick whimpers.
“Nick, I would never allow Gia and Adan to make my son, Paul Jr. their puppet!”
