“Oh, um, okay, no need to get snippy about it, I’m only trying to learn and do a good—”

I hang up on Claire and call TJ.

“This better be important. I literally just finished changing both twins’ diapers and one had the most horrific-smelling green sludge ooze out. You know what I’m talking about right? It’s like—”

I moan and keel as another contraction grips my insides and twists them tight.

“I know, gross right? I made the same exact sound. Seriously Andie, don’t tell anyone, but I think I might have blacked out for a few seconds. One minute I was holding a diaper and the next I was down on the ground. Don’t worry, no babies were in danger. What a doozy! Anyhoo, what’s your sitch?”

“TJ,” I cry, “I need you to get your butt over here ASAP. I can’t get a hold of anyone and I’m having this baby. It’s coming fast!”

“No, no, no, no, no! You’re not due for another two weeks. I’m not wearing the right clothes to help deliver a baby. Where’s my doula outfit? My Mr. Miyagi bandana? I wonder where Connor stored it—”

“TJ, I’m going to have this baby by myself if you don’t leave now,” I growl. “Fuck the bandana and doula outfit. I need you!” I scream, another contraction tightening my abdomen.

“Shit. I’m coming, Andie! Don’t move!”

“Call an ambulance,” I pant. “And don’t forget to bring the twins with you.”

“Right, right. Shit. I almost ran out the door without them. I’ll send out the bat signal for everyone.”

I hang up the phone and look over at the baby monitor. Charleigh is taking her afternoon nap and should be waking up soon. Enzo is over at Sarah’s house with her kids. I brace myself for another contraction and that’s when my water breaks all over the kitchen floor.

Chapter 34

Kiki

“Cam, where thehell are you? You know what, never mind. Get to the hospital as soon as you can. Andie’s in labor. I’m on my way to your house to get her. Call me back!”

I hang up and race toward Cam and Andie’s house. Sarah went to my house to grab Chase and Drew and take them to her place and then she’ll meet us at the hospital. I call TJ but it goes straight to voicemail. I call Connor next.

“Hey Kiki, what’s the craic?”

“Have you talked to TJ?”

“No, what’s wrong? Is it something with the twins? He was texting me about a diaper blowout earlier but then I didn’t hear from him again.”

“Andie went into labor and I’m meeting him over at her house.”

“Shite, okay. Lemme see if I can get someone to cover me here. Does Cam know? He had a meeting this afternoon across town.”

“I can’t get a hold of him.”

“Okay, I’ll keep tryin’ him. I’ll leave here shortly to come help.”

I pull into Cam and Andie’s driveway and throw the car in park behind TJ’s beloved minivan. The side doors and driver’s side door are open as well as the front door to Andie’s house. It looks like a crime scene. I duck my head into the van, making sure he didn’t leave one of the twins out here. I run up the front steps and into the house.

“TJ? Andie?” I shout, quickly moving toward the cries of babies in the kitchen. I walk in and freeze. “Oh my god.”

TJ has one of the twins in a Baby Bjorn on his front and another is in a bassinet, crying. Charleigh is in her high chair crying, while Andie is on a blanket on the floor, moaning.

“Kiki, don’t just stand there, help me with the babies.”

TJ’s stern voice spurs me into action because frankly, he’s never stern. “Let me help Andie, since you already have one strapped to your body.”

“But I’m her doula.”

“Well, you’re gonna have to take a back seat, doula. Andie, do you think you can get up so I can drive you to the hospital?”
