He hooked a finger through my belt loop and tugged me toward him. Viper tilted my head back and kissed my lips. “I’d like two cheeseburgers with the works.”

“You think I’m your servant?” I demanded.

His mouth fluttered like he wanted to smile. “Please?”

“Okay. But you owe me.”

“I’ll pay in full.”

“You guys aren’t as clever as you think you are,” Boxer drawled. “I know what you’re talking about.”

“I’d love it if I could flirt with Viper without comments from the peanut gallery.”

“Darlin’, the entire peanut gallery is watching the two of you.” Boxer grinned. “It’s just how it goes. The minute Savage or Bones or any of the other single brothers start sniffing around a woman, the peanut gallery will move on. But for now, you’re it.”

“You’re done now,” Viper said to Boxer.

Boxer just grinned at him and slapped him on the back.

I went to the table to grab a plate before bringing it over to the grill. Savage was sliding burger patties onto a tray when I approached.

“Are you still sniffing around Carla?” I asked.

He raised his brows at the question. “You haven’t talked to her lately, have you?”

“No,” I admitted. “I’ve been a little busy.”

“We’ve gone our separate ways,” he said.

“You don’t sound upset about it.”

“I’m not.”

“Did she end it, or did you?” I asked. “Three cheeseburgers please, medium-rare.”

Savage scooped up three patties with slices of white cheddar, set them on buns, and then put them on my plate. “Eh, it was mutual. Neither of us planned on it lasting. And when we were done, we both knew we were done.”

I looked at Viper, who was standing with Boxer several feet from me, smiling at something Boxer had said.

“How did you know it wasn’t going to last?” I asked quietly.

“Neither one of us wanted it to.”

“It was that simple?”

“Yeah.” He glanced at me. “You gotta want to make it last for it to last, and even then, that’s no guarantee. To be honest, I haven’t met anyone I’d consider something lasting with. Carla’s a good woman. I liked spending time with her. She’s smart and takes no bullshit. But she didn’t see me as her next ex-husband.”

I glared at him.

“Relax. Those were her words, not mine.” He chuckled. “She can laugh at herself. She knows her own flaws. Can’t fault the woman for not seeing a future with me. I never see a future with any of the women I date.”

“Date is a term he uses loosely,” Willa said as she approached.

“Well, you went and married my best friend, leaving me no choice but to find comfort in the arms of other women,” Savage said with a wry grin.

Willa rolled her eyes and shoved against his arm. To me, she said, “Don’t let his words fool you. He never felt that way about me.”

“That’s true,” he agreed. “Completely platonic from the time we met. You want a burger, Willa?”
