“Hmm. No. I’m only supposed to eat meat well-done now that I’m pregnant, but the idea of overcooked meat makes me sad. I’ll take a chicken bratwurst though.”

I fixed our cheeseburgers and loaded them up with fixings. I grabbed another plate and added a sampling of all the side dishes, including a pile of potato chips.

Viper sidled up next to me. “What do you want to drink?”

“Another soda is good.”

“I’ll meet you at the picnic table.”

“Will you grab some napkins and forks for us?”

“Yep.”

I sat down at the picnic table, but didn’t wait for Viper to dig in. I was in the middle of chewing a huge bite when he slid onto the bench across from me.

“How is it?” he asked, a smile flickering at the corners of his mouth. He handed me a napkin which I used to clean my fingers of meat juice.

“Perfection,” I said when I’d swallowed. “How long do these things last?”

“Several hours. There’s usually a bonfire for a few hours before the married guys get their kids home. Then the single women show up and the party rages.”

“Hmm. Yeah, I recall that party.”

I grabbed a chip and took a bite.

“We had our own party.” He cracked a smile. “And you enjoyed it.”

We ate in silence for a few minutes and then I said, “We gotta talk about something.”

“More talking? Already?”

I shot him a glare and he grinned.

“What do you wanna talk about?”

“I can’t hang around here during the day while you’re off doing your thing.”

“You get to go to work a few nights a week.”

“Get to?” I raised my brows.

“You know what I mean.”

“No, I don’t. Explain.”

“You get out of the clubhouse. That’s all I meant.”

“Not for enjoyment. Not for the purpose of recharging my batteries.”

“What are you asking for?”

“Freedom to come and go as I please.”

“It’s not safe yet. We still don’t know if you were a specific target, or if what happened was random. So, it’s work and clubhouse for the foreseeable future.”

“Work and sex with you is not enough to keep me entertained,” I muttered.

“Right now, that has to be enough.” He shrugged. “Besides, it’s not like you have a car to get you from point A to B.”
