“Trying to talk me out of it already, huh?”

She shook her head. “No. I wouldn’t do that. Only you and Viper can decide what’s right for you both. I just—you’re young, you know?”

“You’reyoung,” I pointed out. “And what does age have to do with it?”

“This is a hard life. That’s all I meant. You won’t get the white-picket-fence, the stability, the routine. Nothing about this life is normal.”

“And walking away is the answer to that? I thought you liked Viper. I thought you wanted him to have someone.”

“I do. But, Sutton, this is a big deal. Just make sure you’re in it for the long haul.”

“What about you?” I asked.

“What about me?”

“What was it like when you met Colt?”

She smiled and peered out over the porch. “Immediate combustion. I tried to resist. But I’m a sucker for a grump with a heart of gold. Don’t tell him I told you that.”

“His secret is safe with me,” I assured her. “He’s losing his shit, you know.”

She sighed. “Yeah. I know.”

“Zip and the others took him outside to try and calm him down. Or at least sober him up. Apparently, he was drinking all night…”

“I wouldn’t know. I was zonked out.” She absently touched her bandaged arm. “He’s usually very levelheaded. There isn’t much that riles him up.”

“I guess where you’re concerned, it’s personal,” I said.

“Yeah. When it comes to me and the kids, he loses all rational thought.” She smiled slightly. “I love him so much.”

“He loves you, clearly,” I said.

“He could die,” she said quietly. “During this war.”

“He could. Or he could get hit by a bus. You don’t know how it all turns out. And as you said, you chose this life, right? You chose him and everything that comes with it.”

We stood there for a moment in silence.

The front door to the clubhouse opened and Boxer came out. He wrapped an arm around Mia’s shoulder and gave her an affectionate hug.

“Your husband has been corralled. He could use your attention, though,” he said.

“Thanks.” She kissed his cheek. “I’ll go to him now. Sailor’s bringing the kids soon. Keep an eye out?”

“Will do.” He gave her one last hug and then released her.

Chapter36

Boxer and Mia went inside, leaving me alone with my cup of coffee. I hadn’t spoken to Carla in a few days, so I pulled out my phone and called her.

She answered, but before she said anything, I heard static on the other end of the line. “Hey, it’s Sutton. Are you in your car?”

“Hey. And yes, I’m in my car. I’m on my way to Lincoln.”

“Nebraska?”

“Yep.”
