“Why?” I asked in confusion.
“Because I’ve decided to move there,” she said.
“Wait, what?” I asked.
“Savage and I ended things, and I made the split decision to get out of Waco. Don’t want to be around when shit goes down, you know?”
“So you know…what’s coming?” I asked.
“Yep. Savage gave me a heads up. I had no reason to stay, so I sold the trailer, packed up my car, and I’m out.”
“You didn’t tell me. I didn’t get to say goodbye.”
“Oh, sugar, you know I’m not one for goodbyes.”
“Were you ever going to tell me?” I asked.
“Eventually,” she said. “But your life is there, and my life is taking me somewhere else.”
“How do you know my life is here?” I demanded.
“Honey, I saw what was brewing the minute you and Viper met. You want to tell me that hasn’t turned into something more?”
“How the hell did you know?”
“Just had a feeling about it. I’m right, right?”
“You’re right.” I sighed. “I’ve officially become his Old Lady.”
“Sounds permanent.”
“It is.”
“Well, you’re in for it now, hun.”
The front door opened, and I turned to see who was coming out. It was Viper.
“Call me once in a while?”
“I’ll try.”
“Carla?”
“Yeah, sugar?”
“Thanks,” I said. “For that night.”
She paused. “Glad it turned out all right in the end.”
“Yeah.” I glanced at Viper. “It did. Take care of yourself, Carla.”
“You too.”
I hung up with her and placed my cell in my back pocket. Viper sauntered up next to me and rested his forearms on the railing.
“Carla,” I said.
“Ah.”
