“I have been thinking about kids.”
“Our future ones?”
“The ones that currently exist.”
“Spell this out for me. I’m tired and my ears are ringing.”
“You know if we have a baby, it’ll cry and you won’t be able to get your beauty sleep. You know that, right?”
“What’s on your mind, Sutton?” he asked with a sigh.
“How does the club make its money?”
“I knew this was coming…”
“The man that came after Mia…that wasn’t about what happened to me. So, what was it? Did I just find myself in the middle of a drug war between a biker club and a cartel?”
“I can’t get into details, but I can say with confidence, no. That’s not what this is about. Colt told you about the skin trade going on in Waco. Our club has put a stop to a number of the cartel’s shipments. We’ve rescued women and children, and been a general pain in their ass. We’ve cut into their profit and they don’t like that. That’s what this is all about.”
“So you’re not in the drug business?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Oh.” I sighed. “Okay.”
“Like I said, I can’t get into the details. But how we earn our living isn’t on the up and up. Got it?”
“Yeah.” I fell silent.
“You’re upset about that, aren’t you?”
“No. I don’t think I am. I know that you and the club protect women and children. Right now, that’s all I need to know.”

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I said as I dug through my newly cleaned clothes.
“What?” Viper asked as he laced up his boots.
“I don’t have an appropriate dress for the funeral.” I looked at him from the spot on the floor. “I can’t wear jeans.”
“Well, I don’t have anything you can wear.”
I rolled my eyes. “Hand me my phone, please.”
He grabbed it from the nightstand and tossed it to me. I caught it, opened it, and immediately opened the Old Lady text thread.
