“I can sleep through anything,” Brooklyn said. “I didn’t hear them last night.”

“Sleep,” Doc commanded.

“You’re just as bad as Slash.” Brooklyn sighed and then stood up. “Good night, everyone.”

“Night,” I said.

“Food was excellent,” Mia said, taking Brooklyn’s hand and giving it a squeeze.

“Thanks.” Brooklyn headed toward the group of bikers. Slash saw her coming and got up to greet her. They exchanged a few words and Slash gently touched her head. She nodded and the two of them headed into the clubhouse together.

“Sex gets rid of a headache like no one’s business,” Darcy said.

“They’re not going to have sex,” Doc said.

“No? How can you be sure?” Joni asked.

“Because Slash is Slash. He’s going to rub her head until she falls asleep,” Doc said.

“That’s your professional assessment?” I asked.

“Yep.” Doc smiled. “I’m pretty good at these sorts of things.”

I looked at the crowd of men. “What do you think they’re talking about?”

“They’re telling their favorite South Paw moments,” Mia said.

“And talking about the war,” Doc said quietly, tapping her fingers against the top of her thigh.

“Have you ever…” I trailed off.

“What?” Mia prodded.

“Has the club ever been on lockdown for an extended period of time?”

Mia looked at Darcy. “You’ve been around the longest.”

“This isn’t the first time, obviously, but this is the most, ah, intense, I’d say,” Darcy said. “Usually the women and children go to the cabins. You know about the cabins, right? Viper told you?”

I shook my head.

“We have some off-grid cabins in the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana. About six hours from here. We take the kids there when things could go hot. But this time we can’t,” Darcy said.

“Why not? It would be safer for you—and the kids, right?” I asked.

“The cartel put a hit on Mia,” Darcy explained. “That means they’re watching.”

“We drive to our cabins, there’s a good chance they follow,” Joni said. “Putting us in worse danger.”

“And there’s not enough men to go with us and still take care of things here,” Rach said. “So we’re all one big happy, criminal family, living together in a teeny tiny clubhouse for the time being.”

“This is what happens when the family grows,” Darcy said, holding out her arms for the baby in Rach’s embrace. “I’ll give you a break for a bit if you want.”

“Thanks,” Rach said, handing her son over to her friend. “Maybe he’ll conk out in your arms, and you can put him to bed for me.”

“I miss this,” Darcy said as she cradled a sleepy Cash. “Lily barely lets me hold her anymore. And Cam doesn’t want to be seen with me in public.”

“Sounds about right,” Mia drawled. “Every time I try to tame Silas’s hair, he fluffs it right up and says the girls like it.”
