“Fine. We’ll live together,” I said. “Just one little problem.”

“What?”

“I had a job where I was earning good money. Now I have no job. And I wanted to use my insurance money to buy a car.”

“Yeah? So?”

“So.” I rolled my eyes. “I don’t know if I can swing my share of the rent.”

“Is that all that’s stopping you from living with me?”

“Money?” I snorted. “Kind of a big deal. Especially when you don’t have it.”

“I have it.”

“I didn’t mean you, I meant me.”

“I know what you meant. And I’m telling you I have enough money for you not to worry about it.”

“You say that like it’s not a big deal.”

“It’s not. You want to live me or not? Forget the money. Money’s not an issue. I’ll take care of it. I’ll take care of you.”

“I don’t want to be taken care of,” I protested.

“Okay. Then what do you want?”

“I want… I want… I don’t think I know what I want.”

“Why does the idea of letting me pay for the apartment freak you out?”

“I’ve been paying my own way for a long time. It just feels…imbalanced.”

“Sounds like a you problem,” Viper said.

“That’s insensitive.”

“I’m not really known for my sensitivity. Asshole persona. For sure. Big dick. Definitely.”

I rolled my eyes and flung off his hand and climbed out of bed.

“It’s not a big deal, Sutton. I have money. It’ll get us a nice place. You’ll go back to work. You’ll contribute. You’ll be okay.”

“I want to work at Mia’s bar,” I said. “But I don’t think that will be happening any time soon.”

“There might not be a bar to go back to,” he said. “Customers don’t really want to go to bars where they could get shot.”

“Point taken.”

“There will be other jobs at other bars.”

“But I want to work at Shelly’s,” I insisted. “It was more than a bar. It was—never mind.”

“Not never mind. Tell me.”

I sighed. “It’s gonna sound stupid.”

“Say it anyway.”
