“Me first,” he growled.

I nodded and fell silent.

“There’s a chance I won’t come back to you.”

“Viper—”

“Sutton,” he said quietly. “Let me get this out.”

“Okay,” I whispered.

“There’s a chance I won’t come back to you,” he repeated. “But there’s one thing you have to know. These last few weeks with you have been the happiest of my life.”

I quickly covered my ears. “No. Don’t say what you’re about to say.”

“What am I about to say?” He grasped my hands and lowered them from my head.

“You’re about to say you love me. And if you’re going to say it now, then it’s like you’re saying goodbye. Well, I don’t accept that. So you hold that shit in and you say it when you come back to me.”

We stared at each other. I tried to memorize his face. I tried to burn him into my brain.

I didn’t even have a photo of us together.

If he died…I’d have nothing to remind me that we’d once loved each other. So I tried as hard as I could to immortalize him now in my memory.

“If you won’t let me say it,” he said, moving closer. “Will you let me show it?”

I reached out and grasped his shirt, pulling him toward me. “Show me.”

He scooped me off the picnic table into his arms and carried me into the clubhouse, into his bedroom.

Viper set me down on the bed and then worshipped every inch of my skin.

And when he slid inside me, I prayed it wouldn’t be the last time.

Viper’s phone vibrated on the nightstand. I stirred against his chest.

“It’s time,” he said.

“I know,” I whispered. I brushed a kiss against his heart and then rolled out of his embrace.

I sat on the edge of the bed and watched him get dressed. It felt like watching an ancient warrior don his armor for battle.

He laced up his boots.

He threw on his leather cut, the club logo a proud emblem across his back.

He clipped a holster with his pistol and several magazines of extra ammunition onto his belt behind his cut.

I climbed out of bed and got dressed with him. When I was clothed, I followed Viper out of the bedroom.

Everyone except for the children had gathered in the living room. Colt and Zip were handing out shotguns to the Old Ladies.

“What’s this?” I asked.

“Every brother rides tonight. The prospects will guard the gates. Anyone that isn’t us who tries to get inside, you blow them away,” Colt said.
